Cameras on Smart Motorways
Discussion
A few weeks ago, social media was rife with the same story... That cameras on motorways that typically only worked when a reduced speed limit is displayed, are going to work all the time.
There was then a list of all the motorways affected and the areas... M25 J13-16, M1 8-11 etc...
Was it just nonsense? I have done quite a few motorway miles recently, and have religiously stuck to the limit - so much so that at times in the inside lane, I would actually be slowing traffic down behind me! (eg when it reduced to a 40mph phase).
So has anything changed - or were all those warnings just rubbish?

May want to ask this chap who has possibly tested the theory on the cameras on the M3

They are well reported to be live without the lowered limit in force - I've seen lots of flashing on the M1. I've kept to my cruise control at 77 satnav speed and not been flashed, but have seen quite a lot of flashing of others. So it feels like the 10%+2 type threshold or similar is in force.

Ask yourself: Is it likely that the police would be prosecuting for 35 in a 30, 46 in a 40, 57 in a 50 and 68 in a 60 then for some bizarre reason not deal with someone doing 150mph in a 70?
When you come up with the right answer...you can simply stop asking daft questions.

I hope you don't mind me saying, but you seem to post with unnecessary rudeness. I'm just not sure the question deserved the answer.

Well....errrm - thanks a lot for that answer. Really quite helpful. Appreciate it!Ask yourself: Is it likely that the police would be prosecuting for 35 in a 30, 46 in a 40, 57 in a 50 and 68 in a 60 then for some bizarre reason not deal with someone doing 150mph in a 70?

Apologies to all, if it seems a daft question, as someone seems to have decided. In fact, why bother posting, if it was that daft. Just save your time, ignore and move on?
My point is not whether police will prosecute if they get you for 79 in a 70. The mails that went around, were suggesting that 71 in a 70 would be enough for them, and that the cameras were now permanently active.
Also, my understanding was that the M25 cameras, for example, would operate if the speed limit was reduced - but did not operate if they were not reduced (ie it was a 70mph zone)... in this instance the cameras did not activate.
So - can anyone impart some words of wisdom... In normal 70mph conditions, are the cameras operating, and if so, do you think you can comfortably sit at 75 without fear - or tow the line and hold at 70 ?

They are permanently active. Just as they've always been. They are not zero tolerance. They never have been, and never will be.
Facebook meme in "Not necessarily gospel truth" shock. Hold the front page.
Basic common sense and critical thinking skills apply, as ever.
BTW, if you're towing anything - line or not - then 60, not 70... But you can TOE the line, if you wish, at 70.

Apart from the very first generation of HADECS they can all enforce NSL. Hence why I said HADECS2 was not a non-NSL device.
While it is not possible to enforce NSL at speeds below 73 mph with current equipment it is at 74 and above. Nobody within the enforcement agencies are going to say you are OK at 75, 76, 77, 78 with the recommended speed to begin FPN or Speed Awareness Courses at 79 and above because there is nothing stopping any police force using speeds for enforcement above 73.
Again, you need to ask yourself, would it be sensible and reasonable for someone to say “you are OK at 75” when the legal maximum is 70. Go figure.
Maybe you and some other sensitive souls think my replies are harsh, fair enough, but straight-forward common-dog-f”ck would tell you the answer to your own question.
By the way, drive at a target 75 in a 70 and I will guarantee you get caught at 79 sooner rather than later.
Drive safe.
You seem to say some strange things and look a little foolish because of it.
Your argument is that it is obvious that speeds above the limit will be enforced, so stop asking stupid questions.
Then you say that HADECS cant enforce 71/72/73. How would people of a lesser intellect know that?
Then you seem to ignore that there have been very clear enforcement guidelines of 10%+2 that might or might not be still being used. But then you reference them.
Clearly the people making enforcement decisions have said 71-78 is ok as nothing currently happens until 79.

jeez - this used to be a great place. Stop with the holier than thou attitude.
It was a pretty simple and helpful community once - Now it seems everyone wants to get involved for fun.
The reason for the question - there is a stretch of M25 whereby one would continually see cars doing around 85, under gantries that have cameras. The cameras were only active (and by active, I mean active close to the given speed limit) when the temporary limit was showing.
When there was no temp limit, then cars did not get flashed at 85 (possibly they would at 95, but that is not what I am getting at).
As for toe-ing or tow-ing the line - really? too much time on your hands?
I don't normally bite to these replies, just in a bad mood today. Come on folks, lets get serious - we are all petrol heads... lose the animosity, and Make PH Great Again!

Yes, the leeway allowed during NSL was quite high in the past. Does an inherently and obviously flawed social media meme mean that it's definitely reduced? <shrug> Make your own decision on that, just as you always have on every road. But one thing's for sure - they used to work in NSL, and they are not zero-tolerance now. Between there? Above the paygrade of us mere mortals.

I am not saying it is obvious at specific speeds at all what I am saying is that it is obvious that there is no legitimate reason not to enforce the NSL, that was one of the original questions. The pistonheads massif don't like it, I realise that and appreciate why they don't, the answer is still the same though.
Back in 2000 ACPO issued some speed enforcement guidelines and they updated that in May 2013. After the demise of ACPO the NPCC took over the ACPO policies in many areas. For some reason NPCC publish the 2000 guide but not the 2013 guide.
You can find the 2013 guide here. You want page 8 for the table of speeds.
I am not suggesting anyone here is of a "lesser intellect" but what I may be mocking is that there are many here who profess to be an authority on these issues but have never read the available documentation, perhaps have read part of it and have certainly not been involved in any way in speed enforcement. I have been and am so you can take your choice, follow the wannabe experts or take some freely given advice.
If you want to get the synopsis of the referenced document you can go to a friend of the motorist here. Please yourself.
I am not ignoring the 10% plus 2mph guidelines I am giving you the benefit of having read more than the table in the guidance but the whole guide. What I am also saying is that nobody involved in speed enforcement is going to say that there will never be a prosecution at speeds lower than the table because that makes no sense when the legal limit is the speed limit and the guidance doesn't restrict enforcement at speeds between the device tolerance and the 10% +2mph threshold recommended.
If you read the linked documentation you can see 'very clearly' that the police have never said or practiced "...71-78 is ok as nothing currently happens until 79..." and most likely never will. Quite why anyone would assume that the police would be assisting the manipulation of speed limits and speed enforcement seems at odds with reality, perhaps that is just my view.

If everyone here wants to continue a round-robin exchange of incorrect statements regarding speed enforcement thresholds as well as strange and illogical assumptions on motorway enforcement great, I wish you all luck. What I would recommend though is just go to the source documentation, it gives a much better clue that Billy-Fast-Boy tanking along in his radar and laser detector clad go-cart.

Ooops - my bad (as they seem to say nowadays!)yes - that pretty much answers my question... No I did not really believe the media stories, but there were so many warnings, I guess I started to think there may be some truth.
So - no zero tolerance - question answered, and thank you.
