Up in Glasgow, turned left from main road into side lane (near Stravaigin's) and got out to survey the are. Plod stopped me and told me it was a one-way street and did I know the penalty, blah blah. He looked over my license (6 points in 2002) and said "I think it would be unfair to send you to 9 points for this".

At that particualr moment, I was pleased with his discretion and told him so. Then, I looked up at the signing on the road to find that it was not signed correctly. The no-entry sign was not oritentated in a manner which would have allowed me to see it at any rate. I almost went up to him to mention it, but discretion and anger at him at the time made me stop.

Really pissed off at the moment, but I guess I will laugh at it in years to come. NOT!

Sorry, but I'm confused. Were you angry at the cop or not? And if you were angry, why? You were driving down a one-way street the wrong way. The cop has no responsibility for the signage.

A comment in passing, there's often more than the "No Entry" roundel to indicate a one-way street; such as: Give Way markings right across the road and arrows (on the road and on posts); if all the cars are parked facing the same direction that can be a pointer too.

You got a minor wigging, and you're angry at that. Don't be, you could have got a booking.

Yes - I'd be Pleased with Plod under these circumstances.

But I'm not pleased at the eagerness they showed in Talivaning me at about 80mph on the M4 this morning, as compared to their refusal to take fingerprints from my wife's car when a big chunk of it was stolen the other day (obviously from the thief - she'd waxed it the day before).

Police Officers simply report offences. They don't convict, that is the job of the courts.

There is no need to get angry or agitated or rude (not suggesting you were any of the latter) - If he had decide to give you a ticket all you would have needed would have been a photograph of the offending road sign.

I think a magistrate would be very reluctant to convict on that basis.

I'm all for a full and frank exchange of views but that doesn't mean the discussion has to descend to a level that does no one any good.
