Was on an A road today and surprised to see 60mph repeaters. Two lanes in each direction with a double white line in the middle. Streetlights.

I would have expected nsl repeaters as I didn't think the white lines were enough to make it a dual carriageway.

Am I wrong and need to go on another SAC to learn more? biggrin

No, you're right. I guess it's to make it clear to those who know a DC is 70, but have forgotten what a carriageway is.

Indeed. Many think two lanes means dual carriageway.

Unless it was Wales where they have 60 and 70 red ring zones.

...most people on here only know of a duel (sic) carriageway.

Here's one which is a plain S2.

I've always thought that 60 or 70 limits rather than NSL is to allow trucks to travel at a higher speed than 40 or 50 (single + dual carriageway respectively), which is their limit in NSL.

No. And unless you are in Scotland the LGV limits are 50 single and 60 DC and motorway (Which is laughable due to the 56mph speed limiter).

The only reason I can think of is someone has chosen to put 60mph signs up to clearly indicate it's not a dual carriageway and therefore subject to a nsl. For reference any combination other than 30mph with street lights or nsl without street lights retirees a traffic regulation order and subsequent repeater signs.

AFAIK it should always be NSL repeaters. Unless special permission is granted - which is the case with the A9 in Scotland due to a massive tourist population in the summer(?)

No.
What about a car towing a trailer - I think I would interpret that 60 mph sign on a SC as over-ruling the 50 which would otherwise apply ?

...then you and James2593 before you are both wrong.

Highways authorities use 60 and 70 signs because in some locations lots of drivers seem to be confused with the NSL sign and can't work out what they should know to obtain their driving licence in the first place.

That would make sense, as the A55 near Mochdre (I think) has posted 60mph and 70mph limits. Maybe also because it's a Euroroute (22)?

Nope, nothing to do with the Euroroute designation.
See this thread - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

The A55 is signed as 50 (not 60) and 70.
The reason is certain sections (J23-17) were built as a Special Road.
As a result they require different signage (similar to the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass).

Pretty much all of these disappeared when the SPECS cameras went up. The A82 still has 60mph signs & repeaters though, same exemption as far as I am aware

Ahh, I never knew it was a Special Road. Cheers.

The A17 has 60mph signs as well as the normal national speed limit signs.
I believe its due to the amount of non locals who use the road.

I haven't done the whole length of it. Where are they?
