Taking guy to court but he keeps being conveniently ill?

Guy has been harassing me for ages, he basically just makes up stories about people, causes trouble, harassed women(charges for stalking, dirty phone calls etc).
So today my partner and I turn up to court as a result of me finally calling the police when he yet again turns up at my house shouting abuse.
My partner was 'really' nervous about going to court, she was a bag of nerves today! So we sat in court all morning and we were told we would be sent back home?? Why? This prick, yet again,was ill, in hospital and couldn't attend, funny that, he was ill the day after we got him arrested last time he was at my house saying he was going to kill me etc! What in the hell is he up to? Is this a common ruse/tactic if you're an arse hole and you're going to be publicly humiliated in a court and 'shown' to be an arse hole?
Also, is there anyway I can find out who the defendants witnesses are? If any? Thanks.

Prosecution should know whether there are defence witnesses, who they are, what they're going to say - you probably won't find out until they're called to give their evidence. Are you expecting defence witnesses?
I'll just reinforce the sentiment already offered by other posters - stick it out, keep attending court and give your evidence. If you bail, the other guy wins and it'll be harder to stop further incidents.

Yep, it's a common tactic used by scum who have a lifetime of practice of manipulating/exploiting situations to portray themselves as victims after relentless provocation of others.
