Got a letter a few days ago stating a speeding fine from August 17 in Viterbo. Any idea what happens if you ignore it. Italian police obviously are not quick.

I had a parking ticket from rome, ignored the first two but they just kept chasing so I paid it in the end, only 80 euros

Had 2 from hire cars in sicily over the past 5 or so years, ignored them, never had any issues, been back plenty of times.

I would be inclined to ignore it.

Got a ticket in Italy for driving down a restricted road. Paid the hire car company their 30 euro admin fee, ignored the ticket - nothing happened.

Hire car co. fees will escalate - be very careful if it was a hire car. Every time they get a reminder they will add more fees.

No they won't, they have done their bit by informing the police of your details and charging you for the pleasure, just the same as over here, once police have them, it's between you and them, nothing to do with the hire co anymore.

Parking tickets are a different matter, they will quite often settle them on your behalf and then charge your CC if you fail to respond.

Unless you box clever and cancel that card as it's damaged or lost smile

Ah I must have imagined it when it happened to me then. Thanks for that re-write of history - when do I get my money back?

You got stitched up. The fee I got was for passing on my details to the cops. One off, 3 years ago. If they tried again I'd have had it reversed by the cc company as a duplicate charge.

No need to re write your history, just saying how it should be, as above and as I said earlier, it should be a one off charge, youv'e been tucked up mate

Unfortunately not mate, when you read the small print you are also auhorising them to bill any subsequent or replacement should the orignal expire or be lost.

So can you please explain how?? if the original card is expired or cancelled plus they wont have up to date card details.
I have quite a few cards and replace them at regular intervals for what ever reason and every time time the long number and 3 digit code are always different.

The same way a company can charge any amount to a credit card irrespective of the limit set on the card, as long as they don't request an autorhisation code.

You will still be liable for charges against your old credit card, whether you cancel it or not.

There are a few things that people never read in T and C's on certain types of contracts when they sign them, one of which is as I said earlier is authorising them to charge replacement cards which automatically gives them the access to get the details from your bank.

Auto renewal on insurance works in a similar way.

We may not like it but that's how it is.

As I said, don't ask me how I know.
