Unfortunately had a prang on Saturday evening which has left my pride and joy severely worse for wear. I've notified my insurers and the car is to be recovered tomorrow to a repair garage.

Sadly, I don't have a hire car as part of my policy. As such, I'll be either borrowing a car or buying a cheap run around to use until my car is either repaired or I receive a payout if it's a write off.

My question is - can I transfer my policy to the new car I will be using as a stop gap, whilst my damaged car is being repaired / held by the insurers? I've done some searching and can't really find anything which answers this question online.

If not, does this mean I will have to open up a new policy specifically for the 'temporary' car?

Hopefully my question makes sense and someone can shed some light on it for me! I will be calling my broker in the morning to get some definitive answers but for now I thought I'd pose this to the denizens of SP&L in the hope I can find out what to do sooner.

(Suggestions for what new car to buy on the back of a postcard please)

Doesn't seem very likely to me. Is your broken car still insured so you can get it fixed? I reckon so. Phone your insurer to see what help they can give.

If you borrow a car from a friend it should not be too expensive to add you as an additional driver. Well, the admin fee on top could double things but probably around 50-75 quid all in for a month or two?

There is also day insure (google) which can help - not cheap though.

Depends on who you're insured with. With directline they let you put a another car on the policy for up to 3 months
