Saw a Transit-sized Police van parked up on the hard shoulder today at the M20/A20/M25 junction, London-bound. It was sitting on the chevrons between the A20 (from M20) and the London-bound A20 slip from the roundabout.

It had two pods on top, each with a pair of white spherical devices side by side. Presumably cameras. I *think* they were either side of the van but possibly F & R, can't remember now.

No standard big black window/opening on the back or side, no "safety" camera symbols, no mention of cameras at all but just "POLICE" across the back. No sign of any patrols further up the road to receive messages either.

I wouldn't have thought the police would put a van out for ANPR for tax, etc - don't they leave that to the Swansea people? What else could it have been there for?

ANPR is used for all sorts of things these days and from your description it's probably that.

Sounds like the Police Facial Recognition camera vans. Perhaps it does ANPR too?

They wouldn't have got much facial recognition from vehicles driving away from the cameras!

Pretty clever to delete the second sentence in my post.

Obviously it would be impractical to use facial recognition on the motorway, but the description given fits that of the vans used.

How hard is that to comprehend?

I don't agree with it either. Supposedly it only cross references against images of known threats and doesn't harvest data. Not sure I believe that.
