Wondered what the BIB's here views were towards this.
My van has really darked out tinted windows in the rear but are a lighter shade in the front as these are by law I believe not allowed to be too dark. After the van being broken into a couple of times now was thinking of just putting same shade in the front as the rear ie: dark.

Wondered what you guys would do if you stopped someone with these windows.

Just getting fed up of car being broken because scumbags can still see there are tools in the car and sat nav system

Thanks for any comments

Richard

It makes it really difficult to see at night time, you end up driving with the windows down!

I almost fitted them to my RX7m but thought better of it after sitting in a car at night time, its like driving with a tinted visor on

There is an alternative if you want to stop people breaking in, rather than stopping them seeing in.

You can get clear "security film" fitted instead of tints. This holds the glass in place, and is almost impossible to push in. I have seen videos of someone with a baseball bat laying into the window, but not actally getting in.

However, as it is on the inside, in a crash it is simple to push out and escape.

Might be worth a thought....

Rear and rear sides can be as dark as you like.

The answer is simple.

Remove all valuables from your car when parked.

At the very least cover up anything left on view.

No need for any dodgy darkened windows.

Pal of my son was required to remove dark film from front door windows and windscreen, otherwise prosecution promised.

A new Range Rover with factory dark tints was hauled off the road a couple of years ago by plod for the samr reason.

Not advised by Surrey Police ... aparently criminals guess that anything covered up is likely to be valuable. [Cue_Angus_Deayton_voice] So, not so stupid after all? [/Cue_Angus_Deayton_voice]

Current advice is to leave nothing in the vehicle (even in the boot) remove the radio (or face-plate) and to leave the glovebox open [not an easy thing on the Tiv as it only opens when it wants to ... usually when travelling at speed].

Thanks for the replies guys. Still thinking about it. Nothing is left in view in the van. I have a big safe in it now screwed to the floor for tools and PC's Its just the hassle with the sat nav. I never leave the front part on but the buggers still feel inclined to break in and steal it even though its no good to them.

Might just do it anyway

Having watched an X5 cutting up, undertaking, cutting in, tailgating, etc today I noticed a real benefit of it having dark-tinted front windows. I could hardly see that he was also on his hand-held mobile .

Official line from the VOSA is that the light transmission should be no less than 70% on the front doors and 75% on the front screen. Currently, tinted glass is at this level, therefore in theory there is nothing you can apply that is available from window film manufacturers that complies with the legislation - with the exception of some 'clear' security films.
We fit this stuff for a living.
Hope this answers your query

Hey Stuby! My XJ8 looks a little "impoverished" compared to the German auto's I see when over there. I realise of course that it's down to "British" laws

What do you think? is it worth getting it done? any downsides? cost? Thanks for a quick reply!

Hi Stuby. So by the sounds of it what I have is already ilegal. What do you think the police think of this?

Dont know what its like to drive with tinted windows, coz never had them, but interestingly enough, in Sharja and Dubai (Middle East), cars that have tinted/darkened side windows have a clear bit of glass opposite the side mirrors allowing the driver to see through "Clear" glass to his side mirrors.

Does all over tinted glass affect vision through side mirrors?

Someone mentioned the plank on the phone as well, they wonder why this law is still being flounted, simple really, enforce a £1000 fine, that may make them keep off the phones. I think we all know that it does distract you.

Yes, everyone is right, rear and side can be tinted, but not completely blackened.
From a professional point of view I always approach vehicles with darkened windows with caution and never put myself in an obvious position where someone could fire something at me....well, at least make it more difficult to do so.
legally you are fine, but it is always nice when someone shows me their hands. You can't be too careful nowadays.

How about, "because I want them to be dark?"

Why are you wearing sunglasses? Heavy night?

No I'm teetotal and the sun was in my eyes.

My father has Mitsubishi Legnum VR4 which has tinted windows all round as standard from factory, graduating from from front to rear (its an estate car so a lot of windows.)

He's 57, and an architect, he's been driving for 35 years and has never been stopped by the BiB. Has he got something to hide? Why make this generalisation?

I'd imagine it's not so much a generalisation as once bitten twice shy.

I must echo what gone has said here.
In cars that were factory fitted with tints then I think it is a bit different. My neighbour has a galant estate thingy, which does look good tinted, but it is only from b pillar back.

Yes, it is a bit of a generalisation, but when I spot a not very desirable looking car, with blacked out windows, then my coppers nose twitches a bit. The only way to sort the twitch out is to stop the car. This so far has yielded some very good results.

If I were a crim then I would black my windows out, especially if I were smoking the 'erb or concealing naughty things.

57 year old architects with VR4'S different ball game.......but you never know.
