Just to spread the word. My other half has had a call, today Saturday, asking for immediate payment of an outstanding tax bill.

Given HMRC doesn’t work Saturdays, don’t call for immediate payment, as far as I know, can’t threaten you with jail and certainly can’t say the police will be round to take your house off you this was luckily seen to be the scam it is. However, some upset was caused.

Just wanted to pass the word out to anyone else who maybe targeted.

Keep your eyes and ears open chaps.

I got the same today. A computerised voice telling me that this was my final warning, that HMRC was taking me to court and that a warrent had been issued for my arrest.

I was bored by then so I don't know what it was going to tell me to do to save nyself, but I assume phone an expensive number and stay on hold for a while or pay some money by phone - I dunno as I killed the call

Isn't this a well known scam? Its been doing the rounds in the US for a long time.

They ask you to go buy x amount of gift cards (sorry government vouchers) because the HMRC accept itunes cards...

Variation on this theme, a text telling me the DVLA had urgently been trying to contact me and this was my last chance.

So DVLA trying to contact me with a text from a mobile number, asking me to call a mobile number about an 'urgent matter', in the absence of any postal correspondence and on the weekend. Right.

Just to point out these can sometimes be real. I have a couple of outstanding enquiries with HMRC, been going on 7 years now. About 18 months ago there was a change of events which didn't help my position.

Around then, I got a few calls from friendly voices saying they were ringing to discuss an HMRC matter but needed to take me through security first. I laughed and pointed them at the official Govt advice never to hand out personal info on cold calls. They invited me to call them on the general number to discuss, which makes me think it was real. But I told them if they wished to discuss a matter, to write to me. No letters followed, and I have to assume it was an official attempt to scare me into agreeing a compromise.

As others have said, you have every expectation that official communications should be in writing.

Another version is the new Gas (or electric Meter). They are changing over and you are due a refund from the old meter so can they have the bank account details to process this repayment.

What (apart from setting up direct debits to Diabetes charities) do you think they are going to do with your bank account details?

Watch out for 07050 numbers. They are not mobile, this is a piece I wrote a while ago: https://fussfreephones.com/post/nuisance-calls/the...

No idea but they were from Eon and they wanted the bank account details to process a repayment of £450, but they are not the provider. It is another company entirely and Eon have never been the provider (this is for the business, not personal)
