Ok it's my fault I know it's 50mph on the stretch of the m23 all the way to Gatwick. However following the flow of traffic no one does 50mph everyone was pretty much doing 70+.

I got to the end and the van in front literally slowed down 40mph so I sped up overtook and didn't see the tall yellow pole with 2 cameras on the top. There's no signs to say average speed check etc and I know it's does clearly start 50.

Can anyone please confirm if there's cameras on this stretch.

Thanks

I came back from Gatwick yesterday at 1900hrs, towards the M25, and to my horror, I noticed the tall, yellow SPECS camera thing (likeness below) on the southbound carriageway.

Didn't see it on Monday at 0500hrs and certainly wasn't doing 50mph and saw no 50mph speed limits/average speed camera warnings.

ETA no one was doing 50-55mph...

The clue is in the word "Average". There's no point in slowing down to the posted limit for a yellow vulture as it's not a Gatso and doesn't care what your current speed is.

I went past there on Monday early, as mentioned above, and no one was doing below 70mph so there may be hope (for you and me). I would think it unlikely that virtually every car missed the signs and average speed cameras. Or, on Monday am, they were simply not there!!

Like you OP, it's the waiting game time...tick tock 14 days!

I had to drive back that way there's definitely no sign for average speed camera. Hopefully it's not on yet as I noticed the first camera said camera not in use so I'm praying. This time I actually stuck to 50 and e anyone overtook me so if they are working the gonna make a lot of money

Yep - sounds like they're in the process of setting up the roadworks. Aren't they turning it into a smart motorway with hard shoulder turned into a running lane?

I live close to Gatwick and also the M23, the 50mph limit you mention is news to me.

Reading up on the web, I can see the M23 will become variable speed limit due to the smart motorway upgrade, I can only see that the Westbound Gatwick spur road is being set to a permanent 50mph;

https://highwaysengland.co.uk/projects/m23-junctio...

"Progress report
The consultation for the Implementation of Variable Mandatory Speed Limits (VMSL) on the M23 between junctions 8 and 10 and the permanent 50 mph speed limit on the westbound carriageway of the Gatwick Spur from M23 junction 9 to junction 9a, was undertaken between 11 December 2017 and 15 January 2018."

http://assets.highways.gov.uk/roads/road-projects/...

"Why introduce a permanent 50mph speed limit on the westbound carriageway of
Gatwick Spur?
A. The M23 J8-10 smart motorway scheme also includes the introduction of all lane
running on the westbound carriageway of Gatwick Spur converting the hardshoulder to
a running lane.
As part of the improvement, queue detection and warning systems to warn drivers of
broken down and stationary vehicles on the spur road are not proposed; it is proposed
that a mandatory permanent 50mph speed limit is introduced. This is on the westbound
carriageway to control traffic speeds to reduce the risk of collisions with stationary
vehicles and smoothen traffic flows at peak times"
