Took my kitten into the vets today to be neutered. Got a call to say he’d had the operation and would be ready to collect at 4:30pm.

When I went to collect him, he was wrapped in a towel and the vet unwrapped him and put him straight into his travel box.

I took him home and when I got home took him out of his travel box. This was when I realised they had left the canula in his leg where they had administered the general anaesthetic. On the way home the cap to the canula had popped off so there was blood all over him. I was pretty shocked.

I put him back into the travel case and left the house to make my way back to the vets. Due to panicking I had locked myself out of my house so couldn’t use my car so had to get a taxi back to the vets. They seemed pretty blasè about the whole episode. The kitten was seen again, they removed the canula, cleaned him up and said he’d be fine which he does seem to be. Again, due to being locked out, I had to get a taxi back via my partner’s workplace to pick keys up from her.

I’m a reasonable person so I’m planning to ask the vets for a refund for the cost of the operation and the cost of the return taxi fares. Am I being unreasonable?

You can hardly blame the vet for locking yourself out.

Taxi fair, defo, go for it, why not. And a new set of keys as well. And claim for a few days off with stress why don't you. It must be very difficult dealing with these dammed incompetents.
High court at least.

Sorry for the sarcasm, yes you are being unreasonable. This is called life, and small mistakes happen. It's hardly the end of the world.

There’s an echo in here.

Maybe you’ll get a free booster or worming and flea treatment for forgetting the canula.

The rest is unreasonable.

Some young vet nurse will most likely be beside themselves for leaving the cannula in.

I'd just move on personally, it's an oversight that's been quickly sorted, I think you're being unreasonable.

Not good, I would be having a word with them, after all you did pay for private health care for the kitten.

How many of the above are cat owners out of interest ?

What's being a cat owner got to do with anything? I have a dog that goes to the vet now and then. If she came home with a cannula in her leg wouldn't be wanting compo or making a big fuss I'd just be happy with it being taken out.

Maybe owning a cat turns people into drama queens?

And stay out of the sun.

Not good for snowflakes wink

I can see you being a bit pissed off, and you should make your feelings known to the vet, but really, put the lockout down to experience.

I would be surprised if no one apologised for leaving the cannula in when OP went back to have it removed even if he did not feel it was sincere.
Any medical complications resulting from the cannula being left in would be the responsibility of the vet but they can not be held responsible for OP forgetting keys.

The big question is, will you want to use that vet again. Having an elderly dog and until recently a 17 year old cat. Any compensation you get will be worth less than a good relationship with your vet.

If the OP is friendly and positive it could stand him in good stead for the future. The cat seems to be sorted so I'd put it down to experience. I would let the vet know I wasn't best pleased and see what they have to say. I wouldn't make a drama though.

Not sure why you're quoting my post for prosperity. I'm not going to delete it and flounce off.

Yes I'm pissed off because once I got home I had to make my way again to the vets and back again. Why should I not be reimbursed for having to take the time out of my day to rectify something that was not my doing? I'm also not looking for compensation. I'm looking to be put back in the position that I would be before this happened.
