So the M23 between Gatwick and Croydon is upgrading to be a 'Smart' motorway by 2020 🙄, and from what I can see, average speed cameras mounted on yellow poles have been installed, although my TomTom app doesn't display them, maybe suggesting they aren't active yet, or may only become active once smart motorway status is achieved. Taxis and commuters seem to love roaring down that stretch of road at 80-90mph, and as far as I'm aware there aren't any fixed cameras in either direction all the way to Brighton, despite what the signs say. Occasionally there are mobile cameras near the Crawley exits, but apart from that it would seem that speed controls aren't all that strict on the 23. Has anybody ever been caught speeding by a fixed camera on the M/A23? If so, where, as I can't find any of them?

The average speed check camera's aren't active yet.

Works were supposed to start yesterday, but driving down on that part of the M23 yesterday signs are still out next to the cameras saying they're not in use.

They will be active once the works start, once the Smart Motorway gantry and cameras are installed it will have permanent cameras similar to M25. Worsk were scheduled to start on 18/06

They're are no fixed speed cameras on the M23/A23 down to Brighton but they have signs for speed cameras out due to the fact mobile speed cameras/police are occasionally placed along the stretch.

My commute home takes me south down the M23.

50 mph signs are now up from after the M25 turn off. The zone ends after about 3 miles (though it seemed a lot longer).

The "camera not in use" signs are obviously gone for this section, but remain for cameras further south, and northbound.

Can't say I see many taxis roaring down there...most are dawdling along in L2 at 60mph fiddling with their sat nav.

Upgrading [sic] to a smart motorway is not needed imo. That road's capacity and flow could easily be improved at a fraction of the cost by some decent enforcement of lane discipline.

And when there is a hold up at Gatwick, no amount of flashy lights and extra lanes is going to do anything anyway.

Hey ho

Here's to doubling the length of time my motorway commute lasts.... frown

Did I miss them extending the motorway from Hooley up through Coulsdon and Purley and in to Croydon or does that explain the standard of driving I see on that stretch? laugh

Currently no fixed cameras, all the way to Brighton, but there are several places beyond Crawley where mobile vans sit fairly regularly. It was also prowled by unmarked cars as well a few years ago, not sure if they are still common.

That was my fear when they started the work at the top end of the M3 but actually in the 3 years or so that the roadworks were going on and the 50 limit was in place it was absolutely fine. Everyone was travelling at the same speed so it avoided the compressions that typically occur (which then lead to brake lights and the 'worm phenomenon where everybody has to slow for no reason) and it was a very easy journey. If they get it right and can match the speed approaching Gatwick to the volume of traffic there then it might not be a problem at all and might actually improve the current jams that occur. I'm not holding out an awful lot of hope though...

The Gatwick Airport spur has a 40 mph 'average speed check', at least on the Eastbound carriageway. However, the only cameras I could see, were small white items, seemingly pointing to the ground; I assumed average speed camera are yellow, on a yellow temporary gantry. Does anybody have any more info on these works & how this speed check operates, or if indeed it is yet 'live'??

Just saw this.

Looks like i'll actually have to start planning ahead with my Cineworld trips in Crawley, as opposed to realising I'm late for a showing and giving it some welly on a beautiful stretch of motorway where you can see for miles and are always going up or downhill.

R.I.P M23.

It was fun while it lasted....

Looks like they've installed yellow average speed camera gantries to the Gatwick spur, & all the 'camera not in use' signs have disappeared, so one can only assume the surveillance is now live. I couldn't help but chuckle when the Audi driver, clearly doing over 40, slammed his brakes on just before the camera. Which part of 'average speed' don't these morons understand??

Well, if he ‘slammed’ on his brakes and stopped before the camera, waited, then passed through, I would imagine he understood.

Looked to be operational yesterday when I drove that stretch of the M23, and the spur to the airport this morning

Special points to the bellend in the black BMW X3 who having piled up lane 2 decided to stop in that lane with his indicator on, when they found the exit slip full in both lanes as they attempted to swoop in at the last second and avoid the queue (or any semblance of attempted merging before the junction). The 2 cars behind him did well not to run in to him, but the truck trying to avoid the queues to get off wasn't impressed!

They probably understand that slowing down at any point reduces the average, and could be the difference between getting ticketed and not.

Every road captain knows that’s it’s a single lane at least half a mile before the filter near hooley:

Being passed more like. I was doing a steady 52 - 55 and people were passing me like I was stationary.

Then you will be the one without the speeding fine on the doormat next week.....

That's a fair point. I will keep an open mind when they finish in 2020.

I think the refuge area concept will never be as safe as a hard shoulder, but then, hard shoulders can be massively unsafe. If you get to the refuge area it probably would be safer.

The m23 doesn't usually get phantom bottle necks too often (in my experience) but perhaps smoothing out speed would help.

As I am on the bike, I can largely avoid the needless L3 bunching that does exist.

If i'm honest, I will miss my "bugger, I'm late home, better make up some time" blasts down the m23, as I recall smart motorway gantry cameras also work as speed cameras.

Bit selfish perhaps.

Phew. At least they got the colour of the cameras correct, else we could have more of this:

Perhaps I should've been clearer: moron in Audi clearly driving well over 40mph between two average speed cameras, Eastbound on M23 spur. Braked hard just before second gantry to what appeared to be around 40mph. rolleyes
