hello,

I have just informed my insurance of a SP30 6 points and £700 fine. My insurance for my McLaren went up £1300!!!

Does that sound correct? Sounds excessive.

I had the same experience. A few years later I got another SP30 and it stayed the same, so look on the bright side, you can afford to take another one now.

Blimey!

Mine just went up about £20 for the same, a SP30, but my fine was only £100.

That was a 10% increase in my premium.

What percentage was your increase?

I only ask as I presume that a McLaren is a mite more to insure than my 1998 e36.

Having the accompanying 6 points tells the insurer more than just 3 points. What was your actual speed and the limit?

Six points for an SP30 suggests itnwas a bit more than a standard speeding.

It will be due to that, unless you have other circumstances such as claims or other convictions.

The 6 points indicates you weren't just a few mph over the limit, I would guess something like 50 or higher in a 30 limit.

It sounds like your risk profile with the points no longer fits the insurers risk profile and they don't really want your business.

I suppose you were right about the McLaren being too fast for UK roads hehe

A friend of mine got caught in his R8, went to court received 6 points and a fine, did the right thing and informed his insurance company who instantly increased his premium by 50%, so yes it is normal

At Renewal they increased his premium, not instantly.

SP30 £700 fine plus 6 points means you weren't doing a few mph over the speed limit. It would have been more likely double. Insurers know this hence the increase.

Years ago I had a Puma and paid about £300 for insurance. My renewal quote was about the same. I got an SP30 just before I renewed, informed my insurer and they said "make that £475".

I shopped around and got it for £300. hehe

We don’t yet know what the limit was. It could be that he wasn’t significantly over. 98/70 is nowhere near double the speed limit. 50/30 would be closer, of course.

From experience magistrates don't tend to impose 6 points for 50/30. My estimate would be a lot higher speed then the entry level for a SJPN. SP30 so non motorway. Could've have been a dual carriageway though.

98/70.

And you’re wrong, as usual.

Yes hence the edit. Typo. I'm not wrong. It's just from my experience like I said. Keep the toys in the pram wink

You're sounding very defensive today, If you'll pardon the pun. smile

I wouldn't say vast experience but from the last 7 or so cases for low 50's in a 30, the mags mostly gave 4/5 points. 6 points were for the 60+'s (or bans)

As regards the classification, they are sloppy or clueless anyway, so you can't read too much into SP30.

Twice now I have had SP30 endorsed for what should have been SP50

My insurance company screwed up when i changed my car 6 months ago and recorded an incorrect license plate so theoretically i wasn't actually insured.
The police pulled me over when their box went 'ping' as i drove passed them but they were understanding after speaking to my insurance company and seeing the the license plate was one digit wrong.

The insurance company promised me a discount on my next renewal as an apology.

I then declared an SP30 (and £100 fine) and they told me my insurance would possibly go up by about 10% at renewal time. I got the renewal price and then asked them about the discount they promised. After a brief chat with his 'manager' i was informed that they were no longer going to give me the discount they promised because of the SP30..cheeky buggers!
