Last night on the A47 i saw 4 unmarked cars heading into Leicester on the A47 from Hinckley direction. It looked odd as all 4 were a bit boy racer in appearance following quite close, led by a newish Golf then 3 A3s (possibly an A4) all black/white. They had wig wag head lights and blue strobes in the bumper and windscreens with sirens. While i'm curious about what they were up to could they have been legit unmarked cars or just as likely local jokers?

Most of the unmarked cars that I have seen have been dark grey or dark blue , they tend to go for the colours that blend into the traffic . Most that I have seen are from VAG with the odd Skoda or BMW in the mix .
You say they looked "boy racer " were they modded in any way ?

Not overly so. Windows were all tinted and possibly lowered but not much. They may well have been legit but just looked odd.

I would imagine they're legit. You'd have to be a right wally to do wig-wags and blues on a new car, and have three more mates daft enough to join you.

I saw something like this a few years ago. One of the cars was a blue Clio which is what raised my suspicion. Not sure Clio's are standard police issue. They all shot down lane 3 of a busy motorway.

Could it be actual police having to use their own private cars for an urgent job and they had pre prepared the lighting for such use?

Often police vehicles carry heavy kit in the back, which may be why they appeared a bit lower perhaps? I know that Skoda directly cater for this with their Eibach blue light kit.

There are so many different departments within the police, along with some sneaky beaky stuff that use cars/vans things you wouldn't expect. I doubt its just friends messing about.

Windscreens with sirens? That's very odd.

I've seen some odd convoys - not that long ago a whole load of very mixed vehicles passed me on the M42, including a oldish VW van and Saab 9-5 estate. They were all being driven in what I could only describe as a 'furious' manner, like it was absolutely vital they got wherever they were going as fast as possible.

So like most emergency situations emergency services respond to then? smile
