Took the wife and kids out to a local family run restaurant this past Saturday night. Not a cheap meal at £157 for 2 adults and 2 kids but good food nonetheless. However, checking my bank account today and note there is an additional transaction of £40 from the same restaurant on the same day.

I will be going there in person tonight to discuss this but I would like to know how this could be possible? It was the the usual mobile chip-and-pin device that was brought to the table where I inserted my card and entered the PIN. How were they able to take an additional £40 without me being present?

Cheers

Odd one, if you paid on a regular card machine I don't see how they would retain payment details let alone make another payment. Obviously they will have a merchant copy reciept but with your partially blanked long number; although once we had a worldpay pdq which decided to print unblocked card numbers on the reciepts, which was a serious issue.
One way or another they will want to know, let us know what they say.

Perhaps in your generosity you checked the 'Give a tip' action and selected £40?

It's quite common in USA to swipe card then show details of a tip which is added on after, not sure if that normally happens in UK too? £40 is about 25% of your bill so seems a bit cheeky.
SWMBO had this done to her in a restaurant, her bank soon got the money back!

All card machines I've used as a merchant show unblanked card details on the merchant copy receipt.

Time to come clean.

As with most banks (I believe), transactions at the weekend are dated on the statement as the following Monday so I called the bank to see if I could get a time stamp for (lets now call it) the unexpected transaction. I thought this may help in discussions with the manager.

Seems transactions that occur on a Friday can sometime be date stamped on statements as the following Monday, if for example, they are late in the evening on the Friday.

The late evening on Friday when you forgot you were there with a mate and spent £40.

Sorry for the time waste!

Interesting, this was at a national retailer so obviously they must have opted to block details.
