Fake Sat Nav DVD?
Discussion
I've purchased a "genuine" BMW sat nav disc from eBay (yes, from there!).
It has all the hallmarks of being a fake, only worked once in the drive, other times it says there is no disc. Quality of the disc is poor, image quality on the front of the disc etc. I'm assuming that all these discs, without a box (and that appear good value), are copies?
Cheers.

It looks like pretty much every listing is the same. Nothing genuine out there, regardless of how much they shout about it.
I didn't cross reference sales channels and going rates to find a genuine product; I would hope that the systems in place to remove dodgy goods would have done their thing. In this case, they haven't. I shall see what eBay can do.

£20 to update one car is good value compared to BMW.
Why do you need to read the disc more than once?
I'd imagine it'll read and copy on the PC if you're trying to make copies for other cars.
They are quite clearly fakes. I'm sure everyone buying them knows what they are getting.
Read a disc more than once? Because the drive reads it continuously in order for the sat nav to work? Why do you need to read the disc more than once?

Oh right. I thought it was a load to hard drive. My mistake. They are fake, so either ask for another, pay for a retail genuine copy or copy and burn slower.
Genuine discs have blue/purple bottoms, not silver. You can’t just go out and buy silver bottomed media, it’s not available to be purchased anywhere. It’s a genuine disc as advertised. Bmw charge £110 for the 3 disc set, I’m charging £20 for the west Europe disc alone. I make a profit, albeit a very small one. If you would like a refund I can issue one for you if you wish? Thanks.

I think the response from the seller is rubbish. Blank media have purpleish bottoms, while the genuine discs I've seen are silver or gold. In any case, in my E46 I've been using disc images that I download from various sources and burn myself onto a disc. They tend to work just as well as original BMW discs, but after a few years you get the no disc in drive issue. I believe this is because the humid environment in a car encourages a fungus to consume the reflective layer of the disc. In that case, I just burn another. My experience comes from CDs rather than DVDs. The technology is the same, but the tolerances for a DVD are surely much finer due to the much more densely packed data. So I'm sure less damage is necessary before the disc becomes unusable.

If buying from EBay at a fraction of the cost of an original it is not an unreasonable assumption. It has all the hallmarks of being a fake, only worked once in the drive, other times it says there is no disc.
