Modern hand held laser speed guns - ticket in the post?
Discussion
For the first time in years I came in contact with a policeman holding a hand held laser gun in my local village pointing straight at me.
Admittedly I was travelling closer to 38mph in a 30 (yes, I know). I reduced my speed with some haste after seeing him.
As far as I'm aware if you've been caught exceeding the limit then he would step out and hold his hand up to pull you over and deal with you by the roadside.
This didn't happen and I continued on my way.
Is this still the case or am I to expect a ticket in the post, maybe?

Interesting, his blue ish police uniform would suggest PCSO? If that’s the case then I should expect an advisory / caution letter in the post?
Blue uniform would be police, community speed watch volunteers wear hi-viz tabards over ordinary tabards. If you were doing 38 in a 30 through a village, I f

king well hope they got you. Speeding twunts have killed 2 of our neighbour's cats within the past few weeks, have demolished our garden wall several times in the past few years, and constantly clip and damage cars in the village, mainly wing mirrors but took the front bumper of the 107 we bought for our boys. I'm sick and tired of
s speeding through the village as if it's a race track. Speed all you like on NSL roads and motorways but you deserve everything you get if you're speeding in residential streets and villages.
That took way longer than expected for the anticipated lecture.

More likely you are all living in one or two car houses and dumping the other 2 cars you have on the street making the street a slalom course and pissing everybody off that has to use it. Couple that with the catatonic state most people appear to drive around in and a few wing mirrors and dead cats is probably par for the course.
Or maybe your village really is a racetrack. I doubt it.
These are the things that could occur:
1. Nothing
2. You get an innocuous letter in the post
3. You get a conditional offer of fixed penalty or speed awareness course in the post
4. You get a summons in the post
4. is not likely and 1 to 3 are in the order in which they are likely to occur. 1 the most likely 3 the least likely.
There is no reason why a CSO or civilian witness with a speed gun can't be used to prosecute a speeding offence.
Nobody here can tell you for definite which of these will occur but 1 and 2 are by far the most likely in the circumstance you describe.

All caused by speeding?

I'm not condoning speeding through villages but 38 is hardly crime of the century. It's easy to blame speed for those incidents when in reality it's more likely due to idiots who don't pay attention, regardless of speed.

And of course you have irrefutable proof that speeding was the cause in every case? No, of course you don’t, so what a stupid post. Cats have no road sense at all and run out in front of cars all the time whatever speed the car is travelling. Drunk drivers regularly have accidents and I am sure they also knock over walls, or worse kill other people. Your use of swearing to make your point shows a distinct lack of intellect as does you blaming everything on one specific cause, a cause you have no proof was the real reason. You, sir, are an idiot.

I live in a village, and have had a couple of cats squashed, not because someone was doing 38 mph, more because the thicktard cats didn’t use the green cross code.

38 is no biggie, silly t

I know people whose driveways exit onto NSL roads. Is it OK to do 38mph past their house?

I would suggest they were in THE ROAD...doh.
I would agree with your thinking on speeding in residential streets though...
Ps...my Brother's cat got run over and killed in a sleepy cul-de-sac in Cornwall by a driver doing <15mph. Prius snuck up on him...!

Why is it always the speeding motorists that kill the cats? Run over a cat at any speed and its dead.

Yes, they can send a NIP in the post.Admittedly I was travelling closer to 38mph in a 30 (yes, I know). I reduced my speed with some haste after seeing him.

Yes we can still NIP without stopping the vehicle at the time. We don't need to provide photos, a statement is enough. This is quite rare and you are much more likely to be stopped at the roadside. I've only done this when parked on a motorway bridge with no on slip and clocked cars in excess of 100mph +.
However some new hand held lasers have cameras built in which we are starting to use like the LTI TruCam.

If you use the TruCam a section 20 RTOA 1988 certificate covering the photograph is all that is needed if the matter goes to court. Saves you writing a statement. However some new hand held lasers have cameras built in which we are starting to use like the LTI TruCam.

It may be rare in Hants but in other counties one officer or witness can measure 100's in a day with notices issued so it is not at all rare in those counties.
