I'm collecting a new to me (used) car from a dealer later this month. The car is mot'd until next April but is untaxed (sorn) since the start of June.

I have a private plate on retention which I would like to apply to the car. Can I get the dealer to do that in advance of the handover or do I need to wait until I receive the V5 document in my name?

Thanks

Personally, I'd just wait till I had the v5 in my name then do it online.

There's no rush, is there?

You need the V5 in your name anyway. Otherwise the V5 (and by extenstion your plate) will go to the last keeper!

I spoke with the dealer when changing my car and he sorted it all out.

Much easier than me messing about, he'll do it much more frequently and understand the process.

The dealer can do all the paperwork (saves you the time and effort) but you'll have to wait for DVLA to process everything.
