What with all the Anti-Terror legislation around nowerdays, and people being arrested for having a pen knife and such, i remembered that it was legal to-

a) legally own a field gun (up to 17 pounder) with a shotgun licence.

b) Legally own and drive a tank (poss HGV licence is all u need).

In other words to can have a mobile artillery piece LEGALLY armed with an ANTI-TANK Cannon. Ammo may be a little hard to get hold of, but assuming you do get it, does this not mean you could drive outside 10 downing street, with a fully armed tank?

I can't see it being very practical to do a stick up on the local seven eleven with an Artilliery piece.

I suppose it could be worth a try, just to prove the point.

the team on salage squad restored a tank recently and it was said that all that was requred for the gun turret to be in operational condition was a shotgun licence

I thought a shotgun license was not an easy thing to get though...

The criteria for issuing a shot-gun licence are simple. The process is simple too.

A shot-gun is defined as "a smooth bore gun with barrel not less than 24" and bore not greater than 2" with no magazine (or not more than two cartridges) and not a revolver gun."

The 'smooth bore' would rule out most modern tank and artillery pieces because they have rifled barrels. Older barrels might not be rifled, but the 'less than 2"' test should place them in the 'firearms' category (as it would most modern 'big guns').

So I'm puzzled by the suggestion that a tank only needs a shot-gun licence (in addition to a VEL or SORN ).

okay, so we shall have to stick to the old black powder cannon ball then? but we can surely mount a bank of them.. sort of like a shotgun, but on a massive scale?

On the other hand, if youve got a fully operational 17 pounder fitted to your tank and then you DO go and blast a big hole in Phoney Tonys front door, are you really likely to be the kind of person who's going to worry that you didnt have a licence for the said gun in the first place?

Nope, i didnt think so either!

The only problem with the tank... how would you display a tax disc in the windscreen?!

A lot of this legislation is to convince ignorant peasants that something is being done.
