A footballer previously had 21 penalty points endorsed on his driving record. He then pleaded guilty to 3 offences of failing to give driver information. The maximum fine for each offence is £1000. He was fined £96k. He appealed against sentence to the crown court and the total fine was reduced to £2k.

Journalists apparently find this too difficult to understand. They today repeat their nonsense first published in April 2017 about 'new laws' and income based fines for speeding offences. I therefore repeat what I wrote at the time. The maximum fine for speeding on a motorway is £2500 or £1000 on any other road. This has not changed. Whatever your income, the maximum can not be exceeded.

The unreported story is that a court clerk wrongly thought that failing to give driver information (or speeding?) was a level 5 offence when it's actually a level 3 offence (level 4 if motorway). An unlimited fine was imposed along with a futher 18 points (3 x 6pp). 39 points endorsed in total.

The typical maximum fine for speeding is £1,000, unless the offence occurs on a motorway in which case the standard upper limit is £2,500.

However, magistrates can impose tougher punishments for persistent offenders, such as in Lemina's case.
First part - correct. Second part - completely wrong.

It does beg the question of what can be done about persistent piss takers.

Not really, people earning that sort of money are very rare, despite what many on here claim around their income levels.

He deserves the original fine for his shocking performances on the pitch.

Ta. Would that be for totting up or in addition? It doesn't seem much considering his point count.

It's because articles like this are written in like 15 minutes by someone paraphrasing a story off the wire, there's no on the ground reporting or research done.

What I don't understand is why did they set the upper limit? If it is supposed to make it equally punitive then X weeks disposable salary with no upper limit would level the playing field. Its the case in some other European countries. We are not footballer wealthy but a £1000 fine is no deterrent at all.

There are income based or no-limit penalties for other offences. Ant McPartlin's £85k fine for drink driving, but not for speeding it seems. At least, not in the UK. A multi-millionaire got a £39k speeding fine in Finland a few year ago. Other examples here:

Can you imagine the uproar when a powerfully built company director on here complains about the fine he received in his mapped 335d whilst drinking a can of Red Bull to pick up his frozen sausages?

I’d always imagined that you buy regular fresh sausages, then freeze them at home.

Guess he could be driving home for the sausages.

Somebody told him if he got to 39 points before next Easter he would be safe from relegation.
