Hi learned folk

My uncle visited recently from Australia - lived there for many years - and hired a car for their stay using his Australian licence

His UK licence expired when he turned 70 and didn’t renew it

He picked up a speeding ticket, which has now reached him in Aus once the hire car company worked out his address wasn’t in New Zealand....

Fine and 3 points - question is how will his overseas status impact on the points side? He intends to visit again so I’ve suggested he should pay the fine, just wondered if his expired UK licence will end up with 3 points on it or if there’s some kind of cross border mutual recognition for speeding offences between UK and Australia?

I warned him on arrival that speed enforcement was much stricter than when he last came over, but hey ho!

As he no longer as a valid UK licence, see: https://www.counsel.direct/news/?tag=ghost+driving...

See above re the points. As to cross border recognition, none AFAIK. However the right person to ask is the author of the above link: agtlaw on here.

Thanks Red Devil - my google-foo wasn't up to scratch and didn't find that! Given he provided his valid Australian licence details it sounds like the 'ghost' licence in the UK system is the likely result, rather than points on an expired UK licence (although the resultant impact will be the same either way - i.e. none!)

They're in Queensland smile
