I was wondering if anyone has any help for me.

We had a new Tempur mattress delivered on sat and I’ve not had a decent night sleep since. It’s far too firm and we bought a new mattress as our old one was giving me back pain. This new one is far worse.
So bad that I’ve slept in the spare room on a cheapo mattress and had a better night sleep.

My issue is that furniture village won’t take it back as we bought it in store.

There t&c’s state that they will take it back only if bought online.

It’s not like I don’t want a mattress. I offered to exchange it with something else but it’s a fat no from the store employee.
Not sure if it helps but we took it out on one of their 0% finance offers.

I’m thinking that the only option I have now is to sell it at a loss which I don’t want to do.

Thank you
J

How did you choose that mattress? If it was specifically recommended to you as being a good one for back pain etc, is there a "fit for purpose" avenue to go down perhaps?

Normally most bed places allow 30 or 40 days trial on mattresses. Did you not get that offer?

apparently FV stopped their 30 day trial period last year.
My back pain isn’t regular. Our old mattress was 13 and started giving me the aches.
We bought the Tempur as it was supposed to be a premium brand.
I’m sure it is but it’s not for me.

Is 3 days (nights) enough time to gauge its suitability?

If you have a bad back already, I would have thought that any mattress would feel bad until you’ve gotten used to it!

A bad back may take time on a good mattress before it feels good.

FV actually stopped their 40 night sleep trial period earlier this year, in June I think it was. Even under that scheme you had to sleep on it for min 30 nights before you could open discussion on changing it for something else.

Would say that Tempur's can be "odd" to sleep on for the first month or so (can feel like you've bought the worst mattress in the world).

Which mattress did you buy ?

Are you able to persevere with it at all ?

We did get them to change the Tempur we bought earlier this year (replacement for our previous Tempur), but that mainly because it had a ridge down the middle and one side felt like you rolling down hill.

Sorry, but no idea what your position is in trying to return it/getting them to take it back if it's not faulty.

Perhaps, but the spare room £200 mattress felt better than the £2k one I’ve just stumped up for. Felt fine in store but horrendous overnight. I got out of bed at 1am to go to the spare room to actually get some sleep. It’s got worse every night.

How can a company not accept returns on something that you can’t gauge on in store?

Unless someone can offer a “get out of jail free” card then I’ll just have to suck it up and persevere. :/

could you be covered by distance selling regs ? I know you went to the store to order BUT you didn't see the actual mattress they just shipped you one, no sure, clutching at straws with that one. I can see why they wont take them back, I mean what the hell did they do with all the 30 day return sweat stained and god knows what mattress they must have ended up with. My guess is Frebrezze and a new plastic wrap sold as new, who knows

We did air on one but 10min isn’t the same as a whole night. In order to return most mattresses, they need to be used with mattress protectors. We bought the Tempur protector that’s also waterproof. Not that I was getting any nookie with a bad back and moaney mouth tongue out

You spent 2k on a mattress? Can I interest you in some magic beans?

People spend 2k on sofa yet spent more time in bed yet most people skimp on cheapy mattresses?

Your body takes time to adjust to the new mattress, first it goes worse and then it should go better ( OK, I have only experience with Tempur pillows ). Been told that when going to Tempur from a regular pillow it takes about 10 days to adjust...

Exactly mine was 1k. Not tempur as I don't like memory foam. I don't understand those that buy horrible cheap mattresses but will happily spend thousands on a sofa.

Agreed we bought a decent (1k) mattress a few years ago and the biggest issue is that when we are away from home other beds feel like crap.

if you bought it with an Amex card you can get £200 of the cost back (second section - refund protection). I don't know if other providers offer similar

https://www.americanexpress.com/uk/benefits/servic...

edit : just noticed you paid on a 0% deal. I think the deal has to (legally) have a cooling-off-period - can you cancel based on that?

I understand your sentiments entirely but all I'd say is expensive doesn't always equate to better. My dad has recently been provided with a medical bed and that has in turn necessitated getting a new bed for my mum; she suffers with a bad back and, having read various reviews, we bought her a bed and orthopaedic mattress from John Lewis. For the first time in years she's been waking-up with no back pain but the new mattress was only about £300 (John Lewis own brand but I believe made by Hypnos).

Now I'm not saying all expensive mattresses are a waste of money - I'm sure many are very good - but based on our experience I wouldn't dismiss all relatively cheap mattresses as rubbish either. Perhaps my mum's won't last as long as some of the more expensive offerings but she'll be able to replace it several times over for the price of something like a Tempur!
