Suppose you are going up the main road and their is a stop line ahead but with a traffic light on the right(not left side of the road) also with a right turn. If the light is red does that mean everyone including those going ahead must stop or does that mean only those going right must stop?

My mate crossed the line and I thought he jumped a red, however the light would have to be on the left hand side of the road for it to apply which I think is incorrect. In any case as we were going a car on our right was blocking us from seeing the right light kind of.

There is definitely a camera facing directly at that line.

Has he committed an offense?
If the camera has caught you will you most certainly be prosecuted or is there a review team that might just let you off if you have a clean record?
Is claiming the a car hiding the traffic light a valid defense?

Would you be able to post a google maps link so we can see exactly where you're talking about?

If there is a red light camera he would be ticketed if he crossed the white line on red. It is an absolute offence.

This is how the layout should look. Clear to go left at all times however I've seen people stop when lights are red.

In that example, the traffic light only applies to the right hand lane for turning right as there is no STOP line on the left hand lane for straight ahead.
OP, was your situation similar?

The big clue there is the lack of a stop line, surely?

Ideally the traffic signals should be of the L shape (reversed L in this case) so that there could be a red light with an additional appended green arrow pointing left.

If the picture posted by covboy is the actual location then it's possible to comment accurately on it.
If it isn't then until you post a pic any speculation is pointless.

Have you managed to sort out your broken wheel stud & MOT yet?

I'm not sure why any of you are even bothering with this. It's yet more pointless wibble that never happened.

Check the posting history. This is clearly a wind-up account - most likely a bored or banned PH'er.

If the account isn't posting stupid new threads like this or previous ones about driving with missing wheel nuts & wheels falling off & it being the mechanics fault not theirs, it's bumping year old dormant threads with stupid replies like this:

I'm not enjoying driving because of those undercover police who will pull you up and report you for overtaking on a double white line or whatever even though its 2pm in the morning on open roads. I'm always worried about having any fun now because of these undercover types. Driving has become an excruciating experience.

5.—(1) This paragraph applies to traffic light signals.
(2) The significance of the light signals to which paragraph 4(2) applies, when illuminated, is that specified in sub-paragraphs (3) to (9).
(3) Subject to sub-paragraphs (4) to (6), the red signal conveys the prohibition that vehicular traffic must not proceed beyond the stop line.
(4) Sub-paragraph (5) applies on an occasion where a vehicle is being used for at least one of the purposes set out in sub-paragraph (6) and the observance of the prohibition in sub-paragraph (3) would be likely to hinder the use of the vehicle for that purpose.
(5) The prohibition conveyed is that the vehicle must not proceed beyond the stop line in such a manner or at such a time as to be likely to endanger any person or to cause the driver of another vehicle to change its speed or course in order to avoid an accident.

They key issue is that there needs to be a stop line so in the picture it is clear the the left-hand lane is free-flow.

There is another regulation that states that a signal must be positioned to the LHS of the stop line. So if there was a stop line without a signal to the left, then it would be unenforceable.

At road works, the absence of a stop line is overcome by a sign effectively saying STOP HERE.

ok guys so here's the place. I'm asking about both traffic lights here. As you can see traffic light is on right of road. both lights were red at the time I believe. As for the units on the left of the road, the first doesnt even show any lights and I think the second only shows lights for bikes.

Streetview link?

Looks a lot like some halfwit has turned the LH lights round, "for a joke".

There we go, then. Didn't need Scooby and Shaggy to solve that mystery.

At the risk of feeding...

The mystery isn't solved, is it an offence or not? Or I suspect more accurately, if you needed to, could you successfully argue against a charge on the basis of incorrect trafficlight-age?

Well, the turning-round probably was... But it's fairly obvious that the other light is one of a pair, and it all applies to both lanes equally.

Good luck with trying. You'd have to be fairly bloody desperate to avoid the three points to spend THAT much money on a vague hope.

Now he knows what's happened perhaps the OP will ring the local council highways dept & let them know.
