Monday morning my wife starts her car to be met by a top fuel dragster like snarl from the engine.

I'm thinking it's some sort of gasket or old repair failure only to spot a large gap where the cat used to be.

They'd cut the pipe either side of the clamps and walked off with the whole lot, lambda sensor and all!

Off a 2002 Honda Accord of all cars. Mmmm, trucky that recovered it said the Honda ones don't go for much, it's the Peugeot ones that are worth the money. (How he came by this pearl is another question but...)

So I'm thinking it was nicked to order for a car whose cat was missing/damaged and they needed it for an mot...

Anyway, all you bearded company chairmen that still drive these executive marvels, watch out!

I can't imagine it was nicked for the resale value and scrapping iffy stuff is a huge pain in the arse for your garden variety scallywag. Probably spot on about being for personal use.

Peugeots you say....... wink

It will of been nicked for the scrap value, same thing happened to one of my customer a few years ago. I told him to report it to the police so he had a crime number for an insurance claim. And low and behold a few days later the police turned up after stopping a van full of cut of cats, I gave the the cut off remains that I had taken off his car to them along with a statement to that effect. And after matching them to one of the cats in the van they gained a prosecution! His insurance also paid for the new cat.

According to this:

old Hondas are favoured as they've got more of the expensive metals.

Fill a 40ft container with ‘scrap’ cats and ship abroad for recycling - by weight they’re worth a lot once the precious metal content is removed from the substrate. Next to no chance of getting caught.....

She did call it in to get a crime number for the insurance but after they deducted the excess they wanted to write the blasted thing off. Cancelled the claim, no point.

Copper called back, said it was a one off and hadn't heard much of it going on, hence the thought it was taken to repair another.

That newspaper report is a worry though...

Interestingly when I went to weigh in the one off my old Civic, no one would accept it as it didn't have a part number.

It will be the dids to weigh it in. A decent size cat like that will be £80 or so. for what 5 mins "work".

Local scaly wags has the cat of our sprinter ! Most annoying , then someone stole approx 8 inches of copper pipe , it was the gas feed to aircon units , they got a bits approx 1” long , released all the gas all stopped 4 units working , the retail price of the pipe as about 80p , scrap maybe 10p if that but still they did it !
We had another scrap collector spend 4 hours taking staples out of old brochures we had binned, I asked him if it was worth it and his answer was I have nothing better to do ! Amazing

Had the cat nicked off my Jeep 4 years ago whilst at my mothers in Norfolk. Called plod out and he said they get loads. Found out it was 2 guys in an old silver Escort estate. Aftermarket cat and travelling backwards and forwards to get it cost me over 500 quid.

Factory catalytic converters have precious metals in them like platinum. I've gotten a couple of hundred dollars for just one from a metal recycler. I've had it done to me where they cut the cats out of two W126 Mercedes (which are pretty large cats).

If you can get underneath a car with a sawzall, you can cut one out of the car in about 3 minutes. Not a bad way to make a bit of money.

Most legit scrap metal places here require that you leave a copy of your ID with them as the blow back can be severe.

Interestingly, yesterday I saw a newsfeed post on Facepalm offering up to £150 cash for used cat converters.

My first thoughts were that it was likely to lead to a few thefts.

Ceratin cats are worth quite a lot of money. Theft of cats has been big business for some time.

Unless I'm missing something really obvious you would have to Jack up one side of the car and then get under with a reciprocating saw or something similar. Taking a chance wandering around a jack and electric saw at dodgy hours, sounds an easy way to get your collar felt. Plus then making a tonne of noise Getting it off.

I suppose if you had 2 people in a car with the Jack and saw in you could have one behind the wheel ready to get away sharpish and with a trolley jack and little regard for the car you could get it done fairly quickly.

The one that was stolen of my customers car was snipped off is the only way I can describe it, I would guess by a hydraulic cutter of some description.

Terrible luck. Is that a 6th or 7th gen accord? Mine is the latter and I had it nicked in a hotel car park

Replacement was £540 inc VAT. The man put on something to make it harder to take again

Can't you just get one out of a scrap yard for 100 notes and get it fitted?

Mine is the Accord after yours, and diesel not petrol.

I got a quote from my local chain place for £900

But got one for £450 + VAT at a local indy place. So worth shopping around in your shoes
