Apologies if this is the wrong section, but it always seems to get good responses. I stopped at Ferrybridge yesterday to fill up the motor, Diesel was 91.9p and Fuel 86.9p !!! Bloody hell how long till £1 a litre
I've only been driving 13 years but when I started I think it was 42.9p a litre, apart from houses has anything else gone up 115% (I suppose speed camera's have, road tax?, infact anything motor related - sorry is that too synical)

Oi! Whippersnappers eh.
Some of us remember the days when going into the filling station and asking for a quid's worth of Super was considered being a bit flash.
Anybody still got books of Green shield stamps in the attic?

You are being ripped off mate.
I paid 84.9p/litre for diesel yesterday.![]()
My nearest garage is 90.9p/litre.
That is more than 20p a gallon difference.
Ok, I am being a bit unfair, as this is the services on the A1/M62, they are always higher. I was low on juice so had to stop. Still abit suprised, 1st time I've paid over 0.90p a litre, but I very much doubt the last.
Expensive fuel is here to stay folks. If the penny hasn't dropped by now, then get used to it.
Many people in the know are stating that the world's oil supply has reached (or is fast approaching) 'peak' production, and that in the future, demand will far, far outstrip supply. Most of the big companies (BP, exxon etc.) have been accused of 'cooking the books' to overstate how much oil they have in reserve. The reason for this is obviously to avert widescale panic on the stock markets.
Anyway...fuel prices are high and will only get higher, so get used to it. If you haven't already, I advise getting a smaller, more energy efficient car to get about in. It makes, environmental and economic sense.
Before anyone calls me a Green Party activist, or a lentil crusher or whatever, then do some reading on the subject matter.
Googling 'peak oil' will do the trick.

Fuel prices are high because of the tax. Nothing more.

Although isn't the real cost of motoring coming down? Sure doesn't feel like it!

Peak oil is an interesting theory, but its on the internet, so I won't be taking it too seriously just yet.
PoD, I'm no friend of the oil companies if you see some old posts, but trust me on this.
For many years there have been the stories about there is only x years of oil left, and it has stayed at x years.
Basically this is because the rate of discovery of new fields coupled with the rate at which technology has developed to allow economic recovery from known but difficult fields has kept pace with the rate of use. In many years it has exceeded the consumption actually.
For a few years now the reverse has been the case. Consumption is exceeding the rate of new resource discovery etc.
The internal combustion engine will continue, but it will use other fuels.

Dont know aout Exxon, but BP dont "cook the books" and Shell recently got burned for over-stating their field reserves. However, Shell subsequently went on to sort out some more deals and are looking very health indeed....
Conspiracy of the oil companies to hide the truth? Nah, not really.

As PoD mentioned - its on 'tinternet and hence dont believe everything that you read. The majority of site are there to sell something, especially one persons brand of the future..... usually with some form of self-help book to the rescue.....
It is true to say that the rising consumption of oil from China does represent an interesting challenge for the world. However, we know where there is a hell a lot of oil around the globe - its just not necessarily profitable to get it out yet.... since taxation inflates the price we pay to such an astronmical level it drives down the margins and profit that the oil companies can make. Hence it doesnt make business sense at the moment to do anything about it. Should the various governments decide to reduce the tax on oil then the margins could be more hence allowing for greating spending on exploration.....assuming that the average price per litre is 80p, taxation and duty is 60p of that.... leaving 20p a litre for the retailer, distribution, production, exploration, shipping, refining, purification and testing, handling etc etc etc... oil is profitable due to the volumes, but for gods sake dont believe the price that you pay at the pump has anything to do with how much it costs to get it there!!!
Oh, and while I think. IIRC the oil companies get around about 5p a litre for the petrol. I personally think its pretty good going to get the stuff out of the ground and too the pumps for 5p a litre and still make a profit....
