Greetings and salutations.

My girlfriend was driving her 309 at 115am a couple of Saturdays ago along Tower Bridge.

She has now received a letter from plod confirming she did 38 in a 20 and they intend on taking her to court for proceedings.

Is this usual? She is very upset about this, considering that in 5 years of driving she has not so much as had a parking ticket.

I thought you got a ticket, paid for it, got your points and that was that?

Any light on the matter would be very appreciated. Just not sure what the whole deal with going to court is...

I didn't think 20mph limits were enforeable, but I can't remember where I got that from.

Really? Thats interesting, but I am not if thats correct?

I have lived in the UK for 6 years, and my opinion is that cameras really do not help one bit. I have seen people panic break, swerve and even go faster in an attempt to outrun a camera.

Provided they are correctly signed, 20mph limits are enforcable. Tower Bridge in London has been 20 for a long time, now enforced by SPECS, although the signage at the Bridge has been questioned - Streaky

20 mph restriction is brought in by a Traffic Order
by LA (non Trunk Road) D of T(Trunk Road) by virtue of Section 84 (1) Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

Under Section 89 offence to drive over limit.

ACPO Guide lines on Speed Prosecution states that for a 20 mph limit then speed between 25 - 35 can qualify for a Conditional offer (60 n'3). Over 35 offenders are summoned to a Court to enable Magistrates to enquire into the case and if appropriate order a disqualification.

Thanks there.

By 'throw the book', do you mean a verbal slap on the wrist?

Or something worse?

She absolutely needs her licence, she is a dentist and has to commute 20 miles to a place where there is no station.

Any further info gladly taken.

I assure you they are, I saw the fuzz enforcing a 20 in Langport, Somerset, on a downhill slope around a blind corner. They must have raked it in that day.

These ones? (pic from ABD site)

How come the first camera is trained on the road BEFORE the start of the limit? Surely that gives scope for a higher average reading?

Ref the pic of a camera, is it a speed camera, or general road camera in the pic?. I dont live in London, I live north of the border, and all our speed cameras up here are looking the way the traffic flows, and are much lower down, I suspect the camera in this picture is just for traffic flow indication, I may of course be wrong.

And as pointed out they see the cars before the limit is enforced, so I am sure they are not speed cameras?

You can normally tell Specs by the post used to mount the camera. The detail in the "arch" of the post is unique to SPECS.

I assume an easy way to defeat the specs system would simply be to tailgate for a short while before the cameras .

Damn that is a long way up to aim the bicycle pump full of paint. Never seen a SPECS in the flesh...

there are specs on upper thames st and tower bridge seperately, both 20 limits. they are both live, and plenty of tickets around to prove it. i drive both every other day and am continually overtaken, even over the bridge !, can only conclude most london cars are clones. there is absolutely no justification for either limit (unless the bridge one is to spare the structure of the bridge)
