police training manuals
Discussion
can any bib offer some advice? i got my start date for sussex police and want to do a bit of homework before i go. i know that blackstones are the 'official' books, but i also heard that they are a little hard going. do any of you have any advice on what books to get? id be going to amazon and there seems to be a hell of a lot there, or would i be better off just going along with the (somewhat pricey) blackstone books?
TIA

I presume your Force, on induction, will present you with a Training Manual and go through how legislation is made and enacted along with Court procedure. Let this all sink in before getting involved in considerable expense in Blackstone's (published annually). When this has sunk in them you can appreciate the manuals.
My day Police Review was a useful primer as to what is going on but now seems full or arty farty civilians. Far better if you can get hold of a few back copies of Police Professional which not only gives policy but also law and High Court results.
Good luck in your new career and start now growing extra layers of epidermis.

There is not really much that you can read in the form of books that will really help you in relation to the training you are about to undergo.
DVD is correct in stating that the best preparation you can have is to secure a regular read of Police Review so that you are up to speed on current issues.
Blackstones is good but it is a difficult read and not very enlightening without further instruction form someone who can explain things.
You could try and get a copy of definitions issued to Police officers.
Things like learning the definition of a constable, what theft is, what robbery is, what burglary is. What an assault is or the definition of a firearm.
This knowledge will help you no end when you come to cover those topics. The definitions are important and can help you answer exam questions quickly if you can spout them verbatum.
Good luck

Sussex Police training manual page 236..........be nice to the incredibly good looking driver of either a white Mondeo, black Rover or muddy Jeep. And yes, he is allowed to park that bloody truck in the layby.
Well done. Let us know where you are posted. If it`s community cop for Moulescoombe or Whitehawk, give up now!

As gone says really. A definitions booklet would be a help to get your head around the way the law is written and would give you a good start. Some definitions may be hard going as they need explaining but the simple ones will help.
If you need i can probably dig out my centrex definitions booklet and send it your way.
Edited to add: i have the 2004 blackstones and although they helped slightly it was more of a refresher and further explained offences after they were taught definately not for before you start!
The blackstones preparing for police duty may help though, maybe worth a look at.

I will echo what has already been stated.
Take it as it comes, don't worry about learning prior to joining, national police training centres do a good job, the syllabus is well programmed and structured to progressive learning with practicals linked with theory.
My advice.......Go over everything you have learned during the day for about an hour when you knock off (normally when everyone else is loafing around). Get yourself up the gym for a bit to unwind, then
get down the bar.
Enjoy it, it's a good few weeks and well done, the hard bit is over.

thanks for all the advice and kind words of encouragement everyone. i might see if theres a 'preparing for training' book lurking on amazon but if not i wont sweat it. probably id have found the blackstones books a little heavy going just as incidental reading - as many of you have suggested - why not wait to learn until im actually there!
thanks again, im sure this wont be the first time im after police related advice on this forum
