is it me or does that scream "institutional racism"?
later on I'd hope to be able to sign up, but *if* (and I stress the point - IF) that is true, is it really worth even trying?

It's incompetence ; it's Blairism.
Okay, there's a problem with non-white people not wanting to be cops.
Some of it's genuine, some of it is perceived. The balance (for this) is unimportant.
Now there are two options. We either fix it, or we can fiddle it.
No prizes for guessing what the
witted "Police Service" chooses. The easy option.
What it will do, of course, is create more racism. Not only do the non-white cops get special treatment (thus annoying the white cops) but they may well have, shall we say, less stringent requirements.
I doubt anyone is in favour of this, cops of any colour, trainees of any colour, people of any colour.
Just lazy Police Managers.
Look, you BiB have guns. Rather than shooting criminals, can't you shoot your managers ? It would have a far better effect on the crime statistics !

Now if the met decided to give priority to white folk, I am sure there would be an horendous uproar from the ethnic minority...........
Perhaps on the application form they should delete questions on creed and race to make it totally equal. I dont care from where the plod comes from, if he can do the job let him, we are all equal after all.

True. The danger with positive discrimination is that they will miss out on gifted candidates to meet some government target.
We all lose out through this.
Should be on merit and aptitude for the job only.
By differentiating AT ALL due to colour or race or religion, your creating a percieved "difference"...
and in doing that, your creating racism, as different coloured, religioned, etc people get treated differently for reasons they don't want to be treated differently for!
Dumbass government. By trying to get rid of racism, they actually generate it.
I'm with Vipers, why would creed or colour matter? It's purely there so they can meet targets. And surely that is more sick and racist as they are using these applicants to prove a political point. Not employing them on their own aptitude, but in essence taking them on, so as to not appear racist... lol...

A contentious issue this one, termed 'positive' in some circles.
My own personal view (I am not representing the force) is that everyone should have the same preferences whatever ethnicity they are.
The problem is that some ethnic groups have more problems joining for whatever reason, peer pressure, family pressure etc etc. And with the police needing to represent the community as a whole, there needs to be a similar representation of different ethnic groups within the service (or force if you are an old git like me)
Difficult one to deal with this one as there are good points both ways.

Is that the same way that parliament has to represent the community as a whole? Or company directors? Or checkout girls? Why? Do these people believe that only a police force that is completely "representative" is unbiased? What happens if I'm arrested by a non-white officer? Should I request that I'm processed by a white English caucasian male so that I receive unbiased treatment? Or would that be racist? Even if the force as a whole was "representative" it would not guarantee that everyone was treated in an unbiased way. Overall averages are no good to individuals.
Society should be colourblind. Until it is, those bits of it that are under government control should be leading the way, not kowtowing to the most insidious prejudice of them all -- the one that says that it has no prejudice while knowingly practicing positive discrimination.

No-one disagrees it would be best to have a balance of ethnic groups in the Force.
However, this is the lazy man's way of doing it, that's the real problem. It's simply fudging the figures.
silverback mike said:This assumes a black person can't represent a white person or a yellow person can't represent a brown person or whatever. All nonsense. Ask the all-woman shortlisted would-be labour MP in Wales who lost big-time to a white male, presumably voted for by quite a few of our minority ethnic brethren. Are Asians not represented if they have an African-Carribean MP? In what way do or should the police 'represent' me or anyone else in any meaningful way? They don't represent anyone, they should be deterring and detecting crime...but that feckwit BLiar has got the waters muddied with a social injustice role (wtf?) and the rest of his right-on kool agenda.
And with the police needing to represent the community as a whole...
It's b0ll0x. Social engineering is not the answer to anything, let alone police recruitment. Just makes things worse.

In a nutshell there autismuk.
I happened to be standing in front of an advertising poster for the 'Met' on a LUL station the other day. It comprised the letters 'M', 'e', and 't' formed by various words including "lesbian", "gay", "muslim", "barnet", "diversity", "camden", "other languages", ...
The text below essentially asks the reader to join "now" ... of course this does not really mean "now" if your skin colour is the one that used to be called "flesh" on those little tins of Humbrol enamel.
The Met's website is extremely coy about this policy ... i.e. bu99er-all mention of it on its recruitment pages. It claims that the recruitment target for "Black and Minority Ethnic" police officers is (only) 17%.
Streaky

17%?
Thats not exactly representative is it? I thought that less than 10% of UK residents were Asian or Black, so why do we need twice that many in the police force to be 'fair'??
Also, why is it now 'Black AND Minority Ethnic' Are Black people not 'Minority Ethnics' anymore? Or has it been decided that it is racist to use that term for Blacks, but not Asians?
How are we supposed to keep up with the constant changes of our vernacular?
Turbobloke is right.
By saying we need black people to represent the black people in a community is causing racism in the first place.
By saying a white person can't represent all black people is racism.
If it doesn't matter what colour they are, why does it matter that they are represnted proportionally by the colours in their community.
Ah, if whoever came up with this stupid idea saw the irony of it! Being racist and discriminating by trying to NOT be racist and discriminating
