Hello there,

I was wondering if I may ask for some advice please.

I've recently moved into my girlfriends place (in a different council area if it is relevant) but currently my finances are all registered at my mother's address and I have spent 10 years in the military moving around the country very frequently and it gave me some 'credit stability'. I have recently left the military.

I don't want to move all of my financial arrangements to my girlfriends house immediately as a) hey, living together might not work out b) don't want too many financial / credit changes in a short period etc.

My mother has received a letter from the council saying she needs to explain why I'm on the roll at her house, whilst she is claiming single personal occupancy.

If I have a 'degree of permanence' (I visit regularly smile) which I believe is the litmus test for being on the roll, does that mean she's liable for CT on me too? In an ideal world I'd be on the roll at my mother's house for another 3 months, then transfer the majority to my girlfriends place.

Thank you smile

Where were you living with the military? Where you paying Council Tax or a payment instead of Council Tax?

Hi,

Yes you pay CILOR which is equivalent to CT for your accommodation.

Hi OP,

Are you paying CT at your girlfriend's?

If so, you should be able to explain the context (HMAF service, etc.) to your mother's council. They're normally alright about it as long as it is something sensible...

Had this once or twice.
Simple thing to sort, call the CT office explain the situation. You aren't pulling a fast one with saying you are living with your GF whilst keeping a postal address separate. As long as you are paying CT at your GFs job jobbed.

Yup. Paying CT at girlfriends.

Helpfully my mum has just sent the form back saying I've moved out in April, rather than waiting for an answer.

I think I'll wait a month then put myself back on the roll online as I guess they won't speak to me on the phone as I'm not the registered owner?
