As this seems to be a real epidemic
What is actually being done to prevent this ?
It’s not only the cash going missing but buildings being destroyed and lives potentially at risk from people living above etc and the plant being nicked to carry out the thefts.
Surely with modern tech there is something that could be done to render it a pointless operation for the thieves in the first place.
Cash gets shredded upon the machine being moved a certain amount or some form of chemical which renders the money useless
It’s apparent the measures employed are currently not working. if there are tracking devices then they obviously don’t work.
Isnt it about time the people responsible for cash machines get a grip of it ?

get shot of the ATM's would work, i went and got £100 on friday for the evening (like a ritual), but i got an Uber to the pub, paid on my apple watch in the first 2 pubs, its much quicker and you dont get a pocket full of change every round , then went for a turkish and paid by card.
If cash ended tomorrow I genuinely dont think it would effect my life one bit.
If i was living off the grey economy them id be mortified.
Maybe they should TAX cash, want £100 that will be £120 out of your account because odds are you will be up to no good with it anyway

biggrin to be fair It’s not often I use the cash machine as I generally pay with my card so I doubt I would miss it much either but surely there is ways and means to stop it happening other than removing them completely it can’t be that difficult can it ?

Old people using cash is another factor that puts them at risk (amount many others) from an increased risk of crime . Always seeing terrible stories of distraction burglaries and toerags getting away with £500 in cash.
I have whatever is in my wallet and a big pot of shrapnel full of all the change left over from nighths out , you always have to pay with at lease a tenner , it’s the law

I do think 24hr ATMs are becoming far less necessary. That said you do still see in quite major outlets cafes etc sorry card machine OOO cash only. They nearly decided not to replace the £50 but are now making another. 500 Euro note didn't last long here though.

Ah the old “our cash machine isn’t working but there’s a cash point right next door “ story . 2 reasturants in my town made laminated signs to put up , that’s how often is happens ! Every weekend. I forced the issue once just to see , “sorry can’t get cash out, have to give you an iou , or go home and get a cheque book! Card Machine appeared, mumbling about have to give it a try out the back , signal strength etc and low and behold it worked , always small family type outfits never franchise chains it happens to

I went cashless today and didn't notice until tonight when I took my wallet out of my coat. No money in it and no coins in my person. I bought travel tickets, coffee, lunch a soft drink and a cake thing, all with my card.

The days of not leaving home without £40-50 on me - just in case - are fast disappearing. My only real need for cash these days is at my local Chinese takeaway which doesn't do cards, Just Eat etc. .

Donkeys years ago they had cash carrying cases that drenched the notes with indelible ink in the event of theft. Surely ATM machines could have similar anti- tamper devices?

That’s what I thought it stopped the cash box carried by the security guards being a target
Didn’t it ? so why don’t they have a similar set up is beyond me, I get lots of people don’t use cash machines to much these days including myself but that isn’t really solving the current problem of the machines being ripped out the walls to fund the gangs that then go on to purchase coke etc to make even more money. it just seems crazy to me it’s not getting priority treatment by technology to stop it in its tracks
Madness confused

Sad days - I've sold a few sets of wheels and a car in 2018 mostly for cash, because I don't have a card reader!

Anyway enjoy the takeaway - assuming you had some other method of payment! laugh

Whilst we're slowly moving towards a cashless society, it's interesting how certain cashless transactions draw more comments than others. I live in London, and I had the day off work today to sort some household stuff out. As part of that, I had 45 minutes to kill in town, so grabbed a coffee at the cafe by the underground station. Lots of notices about contactless payments effectively replacing oyster cards, and indeed 60% of people tapping in were using their bank card rather than their oyster card.

I use apple pay (from my watch) for most transactions and it's interesting how probably every other time I use it, someone comments saying "wow, that's magic" or "did you just pay with your watch?!" or some throwaway Knight Rider comment. The latter moreso if I'm taking a phone call on my watch e.g. if my hands are full or my phone is in another room.

Had this interesting experience at my local Chinese recently. Popped in to grab a greasy chow mein, realised it was the first time I'd actually tried to pay on card. No dice, they didn't accept card. Fine, I simply ordered what I wanted on Just Eat, and when the guy left with my order I drove home behind him and was greeted with a lovely hot delivery on my doorstep.

Hopefully they will quickly realise that the 15% they pay to JustEat is much more than they would pay to just have a card machine!

Back in the real world wink and outside of the metropolis of London and it's surrounding areas you will be sadly disappointed. Supermarkets are ok, petrol ok, small shops, most pubs and takeaways are a real struggle. Having checked JE doesn't function here in sunny Lincolnshire, well at least in my area.

Specially when our travelling brethren keep nicking the cashpoint. Now down to a single one in the three surrounding villages. And the Chinese and Kebab places are cash only.

A restaurant I've been to a few time this year (It is excellent if you like Turkish, Syrian or Lebanese type of food) in Cardiff is purely a cash only place .....

However they have made sure all customers have a way of getting cash without too much trouble .... smile

It's mostly the smaller places that don't take card due to the payments to use card machines.

This happened to a shop in our village not many weeks ago. At 2.30am they drove a stolen L200 in to the shop, before being disturbed and fleeing in a (also stolen) transit, later found burnt out.

The bank have refused to put in another machine.

Not really an issue if you have PayPal or a bank account. Safer for both really. Bought a mcycle recently. Paid the deposit by PayPal. Turned up. Viewed it etc, paid the balance by bank transfer. Taxed it online and road off.
