I witnessed a robbery a couple of weeks ago when walking back to my car and called the police.

I’m pretty sure the fellas committing the offence clocked what was going on, so I got in the car and drove off. It looked like they took a photo as I was driving off - You don’t hold a phone that way for any other reason. I’m fairly certain of that.

Let’s say they were caught and have a grudge about it. I live local to the scene so worry they could obtain address details from DVLA. I know they won’t issue details for any good reason, but you can always make it up? Parking on a driveway for example. Will DVLA notify me if there were any requests for info?

Paranoid etc I’m sure just wanted to check

If really worried I'd just buy a cheap private plate. With all the online stuff you should be able to have a plate swap in a couple of days max. Then talk to dvla about another real plate.

I would have thought the Police would have gone though their phone`s, and deleted any photos from the crime scene possibly. After downloading them to use as evidence. confused

The DVLA aren't going to give out anybody's details without some sort of traceable record of who is asking for the details, and why they want the information.

Even if someone makes something up, as you're suggesting, the DVLA are not going to just take that at face value, instantly give out the information, and then check the enquirers details later, only to find they've made a massive error (Have a read here: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/governmen... )

They could try getting your details by asking for a V5 for your registration number to be issued to them, but the DVLA would contact you first to notify you that someone was asking to the vehicle registered to them, and you would have to weeks to inform them that they should not issue the V5

(If you failed to respond in 2 weeks, they issue the V5 - Bit of a pcensoredsser if you away on business or on holiday for several weeks. You'll come home to find you're no longer the registered keeper of your own car!)

My monies on they've just pointed a phone at you, without having the camera activated, just to try to intimidate you from reporting what you've seen

(How many criminals are going to commit a robbery, and hang around long enough afterwards to take out their phone, bring up the camera, take a picture of anyone who might be around, or any vehicles, and then make their getaway? - Not saying it's impossible [some criminals are pretty arrogant when they commit a crime, as though no one can touch them], but it seems unlikely)

Snitches get stiches lol.

Wouldn`t worry as they are unlikely to get caught by the inept busies we have today anyhow.

You were seen on your phone near a crime scene. How would they know you were calling the police?

Unknown.. I got out of there before the police arrived.

It was probably fairly obvious I was snitching - I’d make a terrible detective. They saw me walk by, stop down the road near the car, make a call, stare at them (had to describe them to the police), and then driving off when they got their camera out..

I got caught up in an armed robbery in 2004, helped fight off 4 guys smashing the windows a jewellers and grabbing watches, i was working at the time, my truck was parked right outside and is pretty visible. Did think maybe they would come after me so armed myself with a baseball bat for a few months but soon forget about it.

Hate to say it but... if you’re local; they could just spot you’re car: even if they hadn’t thought to look for you; it could be an opportune sighting. Maybe get a cheap private plate... and a car wrap; and a body kit. I kid. But if you’re paranoid; a cheap private plate may help a little.

Great excuse for a change of car. Then sell the old one to someone you don’t like.

OP should move to the opposite end of the country.

And grow a beard.

Change clothing style.

Change car/wife/kids/dog.

Just can't be too careful these days and you just don't know who someone knows.

You are the least of their worries. Unless you are testifying against the mafia, really, no one is going to be thinking about you.

I know it is stressfull, but remember, these guys are thick scum. Chasing down a random bystander is not going to be on their list of priorities.

Cops can`t access phones. The Scottish cops have bought kiosks from the Israelis but they are being ruled illegal as they should need a warrant to access mobile phone.

If you got lifted would you give the cops your passcode ? smile

Where and how have they been ruled illegal and require a warrant?

You’ll have to forgive me for not taking your post on face value given some of your other posts on policing / criminal law which were wildly inaccurate.
