So I bought a R32 GTR earlier this year and its just come back from having some restoration work. I bought the car off a guy who works in the USAF so the car in his ownership was tax exempt. I phone the DVLA before sending the registration certificate off and they said to write 'private' in the tax class box. I did this and when I received the new registration certificate it still says the car is tax exempt. I phoned the DVLA again, explaining the situation, and they said to do the same thing. So I sent my registration certificate off, with a covering letter explaining the situation, and then received a new one with no changes i.e. still tax exempt. So I phoned the DVLA (AGAIN!) and they said when you tax the car, go to a post office and they will be able to tax it for me and at the same time register it as a private owner, rather than being exempt from tax (I am unable to tax the car online and when I try it says go to a post office). So I finally went to tax it the other day so I could take it for its MOT (currently SORN) and the post office system will not allow me to tax it. It says to phone the DVLA. I phone the DVLA and they say to go to a post office. I could carry on using the car as its registered as tax exempt but am not comfortable with this. So how can I actually tax my car??

You can't tax it without an MOT anyway. So book an MOT, then take the certificate to the PO.

It doesn't need to be taxed to take it to a pre arranged MOT

Has that MOT run out? IIRC they won't let you tax it if it's about to run out either.

Tosh!

You can tax a vehicle as long as it has a valid MOT. It might expire tomorrow, but as long as it is valid, they cannot refuse the VED.

MOT expires on 5th December, no problem to pay for a year's tax on 28th November, to start on 1st December.
MOT expires on 29th November, you will not be allowed to pay for a year's tax on 28th November, to start on 1st December.

So are you saying that the reason the post office system could not tax it is because it was too close to MOT expiry date?

Not exactly, it's because there is no evidence that the car will have a valid MOT on the day when the tax is due to start.

Perfect, thanks. so if I take my MOT cert along with registration document then it looks like I'll be able to change the tax class

Which is exactly what I posted up there ^^^^

As long as there is valid MOT for when you want to tax the vehicle, they cannot refuse.

No you didn’t. You said your mot can run out tomorrow and you can still tax the car. If your mot ran out tomorrow unless you’re taxing your car to start today (possibly tomorrow depending on the exact interpretation of mot running out tomorrow and whether you meant tomorrow was the last day of mot or the first day when it wasn’t mot’d) they wouldn’t let you tax it.

The MOT needs to be in force on the first day the tax applies to not the day when you apply/pay for the tax, and most people pay their VED a week or two ahead

The online system is limited in what it will allow you to do and only certain tax class changes are allowed. It appears that you can change from a PLG to exempt but not the other way around. I bought a car from a dealer that had been on an exemption and they made sure I picked the car up during PO business hours and then took me to the nearest PO to do buy the tax and change the class change which was very easy.

Out of interest - what are the options for just keeping quiet and enjoying a tax exempt car?
Sounds like a winner to me smile

You only have to 'get away with it' for a few years to break even (up to £1000/no points for an untaxed car).
I mean it's not like you didn't try to change the tax status, right - blame the system maaaaan.

Genuine question.
