Plod - can I try your hat on.
Discussion
Whats peoples thoughts on the pictures we often see of groups of pi55ed up women out on the town all over a young police officer having pictures taken with his hat on. Having been to spain recently the plod there would have had none if it, cant think of many other countries come to think of it.
Is this good PR or does it just add to the lack of authority for plod and the public impression their a bit of a joke. I'm swayed towards the latter.

I hate to swing the lamp, but I struggle to see any coppers with their hats on these days so this might be good use of them. Is this good PR or does it just add to the lack of authority for plod and the public impression their a bit of a joke. I'm swayed towards the latter.

Never bothered me when i was in. Good way of getting people onside.
I think I was the youngest in the force at the time, and based in a busy seaside town, lots of ladies wanted to play with my helmet.
I can see it from plods POV, why cause an argument and put yourself at risk with maybe limited back up.I think I was the youngest in the force at the time, and based in a busy seaside town, lots of ladies wanted to play with my helmet.
Good way to break down any barriers between the public and plod I reckon. Anything that does this has got to be a help.
Many years ago I went over to Paris for the Wales v France rugby and les flics let us sit our big stuffed dragon on their motorcycle and 2 of them had their photo taken with it. Nice fellas too ...

Catch them on a good day and Gendarmarie can be alright. Many years ago I went over to Paris for the Wales v France rugby and les flics let us sit our big stuffed dragon on their motorcycle and 2 of them had their photo taken with it. Nice fellas too ...

I was once riding up from St Giron to the Col du Port via Massat on Tour day. Four police outriders appeared next to me, and giving me a thumbs up, provided a full presidential guard all the way to the top. They cut through all the traffic with me riding out of my skin and deposited me at the top to a round of cheers from the fans.
Not what a fat punter like me expects.
No problem with it at all, do it all the time. It's nothing to do with standards or authority, it's about being nice to people, spend a couple of minutes with them, if they want a pic great. I don't want people to feel scared to ask, that's not what being a police officer is about.
Obviously you have to judge your crowd, if it's a family with young kids who wants to try my hat on it's great as I don't want he children to be scared to talk to me if they need to. If it's a bunch of pissed up mouthy chav idiots who are just taking the piss then I'll politely decline.

Surely the public want the police to be approachable etc when everything is fine and friendly. They only need to be "police" when the situation requires it. Makes sense to me to let officers allow the public to have pics etc if they are happy.
You see footage of US cops stopping and playing catch/basketball/football etc to help relations with the youth, seems like a good idea to me too.

Quite a few years ago I was in New York on holiday and saw the biggest bloke I have ever seen who also happened to be a cop. He was absolutely mahoosive...pushing 7 foot tall and huge across the shoulders (and..ahem...belly). He was standing outside an hotel with a bunch of normal sized cops. I (politely) asked if I could have a photo with him...he totally dwarfed me and I'm 6' 1". Very polite and friendly too when we had a chat.

Million-to-one shot, but was it Derek Poundstone? He's massive, America and [was/is] a cop.
