Threatened by another driver - sort of!
Discussion
Call, it didn’t happen, or all made up if you want, or I’m a crap driver and provoked him by doing more than I’ve said (which I honestly didn’t) but wondering what, if any, options I would have had in this situation had I had dash cam footage (and audio? If that’s a thing)…theoretical of course as I don’t have a dash cam but am going to now get one.
Saturday evening 7.30 just me and my 5 year old nephew in car (edit . Alfa Giulia Quadrofoglio if that’s relevant given the events that follow), been to football with him, got him happy meal from McDonalds as his folks are out and my bros PiL are babysitting him for the night, and was then dropping him off home. McDonalds is other side of town to where his folks live, so I’m not familiar with the roads that much, so following Sat Nav.
Roads are pretty empty, and McDonalds roundabout just off A12 is too. Coming through some new build area, new road it seems, I’m doing 30 as not sure what limit is, and notice some care behind me as close as possible, could barely see there lights if at all, they were so close), I maintain 30 for a few minutes till Sat Nav now shows limit of 40, so I speed up gently to 40. I’m guessing that’s why car behind was right up my bum. Nope he’s still there, very close as I do 40, keep driving, and I’m not going to break limit as despite sat nav not showing cameras, seems the sort of road there could be some.
Eventually get to roundabout ahead, 2 lanes, bloke goes around me in what turns out to be a oldish Dark blue/black Astra, and veers into my lane, to which I slam on my breaks and tap the horn. He precedes to carry on and weaves back into his lane and nearly hits another car and then back into mine and is then held up by the traffic lights. I hung back and proceeded slowly but pull up behind him leaving a car length at lights. He opens his door half get out, shouting that I cut him up. (I’m fairly certain I didn’t, and the only thing I’ve done is drive 30 in a 40 when he’s in hurry seemingly).
I don’t engage, and he doesn’t get fully out, and gets in and floors it off, trying to weave in and out of traffic ahead, but without much joy, other folks hooting him. At this point I’m thinking he must be drunk or something, and I proceed around 35 in a the 40 back from this erratic car, until next roundabout where the exit we take is 2 lanes. Somehow despite proceeding under the limit I come up in the right hand lane to him driving very slow in the left, at which point he pulls in front of me and starts waving something out of his window, I hang back inconveniencing the light traffic behind, he pulls back into left lane slowing, but i'm not wanting to pull alongside him. It becomes apparent he's waving a screwdriver out of his window, which he does as I hang back for a few hundred yards until we approach another roundabout to which I manage to get into the left hand lane and he pulls into the right hand lane. My nephew at this point is asking whats he waving as he could see from his child seat in the back. He waits in right-hand lane at the roundabout for me to reach him in the left, upon which he pulls into my lane, trying to block me off, shouting at me, so I wind window down and say what’s your issue (had the kid not been in the car I would possibly have been somewhat more blunt in tone, but despite being a well-built company director size, not one to get into a fight/confrontation) to which this guy (turns out to be a young white guy in his early 20s on his own, talking in ‘ghetto’ speak) says he’s going to f me up, follow me home, find out where I live and steal my car from my drive. To which he then zooms of and appears to go up the road straight ahead on the roundabout, whilst I proceed to turn left.
I was quite shaken by all this tbh and failed to note his plate and was thinking wtf do I do if he follows me or rammed me or something, especially with my nephew in the back crying as he heard what the guy said. Having turned left I kept a good lookout in the rear view, hoping this guy hadn’t come all the way round the roundabout or something, and if he had if it was a good idea to pull into a town centre road where there were lots of people about despite it being evening. I didn’t see him and carried on over the next couple of roundabouts and then side roads to my bros house, weary that he was following and would appear once I was parked and also not wanting to reveal the house I was going to. Confident he wasn’t, I parked got my nephew out of the car in his upset state and got to my bros house, explaining why my nephew was upset to my bros PiL’s they exclaim XXX town is full of crazy people and ignore it. When I told my old man the next day he said much the same thing but it was probably my car bringing on the aggro (hence my reference to the Quad, but I’m of the opinion that it wasn’t as most people haven’t a clue what it was, and I wasn’t in race mode (which makes it noisy and can draw attention to it)). He also opined I should approach the police about it as there is likely cctv on the stretches of road and they would capture this guy’s erratic driving and waving of screwdriver out of his window, in what I can only assume was a threat), but I doubt the police could do anything. I wasn’t that bothered especially as I don’t even live in that town, but the upset it caused my nephew has peed me off, even though he was fine the next day.
Now this being PH I’m sure most will call BS, or say I did stuff I’m not mentioning, but I’m 99.9% certain I didn’t cut this guy up on a roundabout, and the only thing I’ve done is hold him up doing 30 in a 40 for a few minutes, and toot him when he swerved into my lane causing me to brake hard. (and it was a brief toot, not a long blast as some do in such situations). My questions are a I assume I’d be wasting my time in pursuing cctv footage, given nothing was actually done to me other than threats, and would dash cam audio pick up what was said from his car to mine, my driver’s window being open him shouting opposite with his passenger window open. It was clear enough for nephew on the back seat to hear it all, and would dash cam give a wide enough view to capture all this t
ttery?
PS, apologies if certain bits don’t make sense or poor grammar/syntax, admittedly how I constantly caught up with him after the half getting out of his car part, despite him then trying to make progress weaving in and out of traffic ahead, are not to clear in my head, other than him not being able to clear traffic and then slowing right down till I caught up with him, is a bit hazy, albeit I was driving at 35ish below the limit not wanting to catch him up again.

If you don’t want confrontation, why create it by tooting? It’s the car equivalent of coming across the pub fighter knobhead and mumbling “d
head” under your breath, ur loud enough for him to hear. You’re just asking for trouble. If you don’t want the trouble then just let it pass you by. Doing it with a kid, especially not your kid in the car is pretty stupid IMO.
Before everyone jumps on me, I’m not defending the knob in the Astra, I’m just saying don’t stir things up when there’s no need to.
Having a nice car will make you a target for the knobs on the road, so you should be well used to it by now.

The other guy is a complete moron.
However, I have to agree with the other post, what exactly were you hoping to achieve by beeping the horn?
As soon as you beep your horn you are escalating the situation and inviting a punch in the face. Which unfortunately this moron you came across may have been capable of.

For the benefit of those following along at home, I assume a "quad" is an Alfa Romeo Giulia in four-cheese trim?
Other than that, sounds like you encountered a common or garden knobhead. It's ok to be shaken up by it, but I doubt anything will come of it.
The honking probably didn't help, can't say I blame you, but I guess just keep in mind that regardless of the rights or wrongs of the situation, this type is just looking for a justification to go off on one.

Sorry Quad as in Giulia Quadrofoglio. Never had aggro before on the road in it.
I had no idea that tooting angered up some people, what sort of person would actually get so angered by that as to react as they did? I don't meet people like that! Maybe in naive.
I suppose tooted to let him know i was there in case he hadn't sen me, in case he veered again, almost instinctive reaction i suppose (rightly or wrongly), and i imagine 95% of people would have done the same. I will be more careful in future when carrying children.
i guess the sort of person who has a screwdriver handy to there drivers seat is gonna be the sort who does this kind of thing...

What is a Quad?
Is it a Quad bike or one of those Renault Twizy things?
Always best to ignore t
ts on the road.
I passed a side road out in Surrey on the way home with my 2 sons and an Astra van pulled out behind me and sat right on my boot. I'm not a slow driver and these were country roads I knew well.
These idiots were revving and shouting and dangerously close. They couldn't pass as it was a very narrow lane with cars coming opposite.
Stupidly I slammed on my brakes and let go before they crunched me.
Really stupid thing to do. They went mental.
They followed me, weaving and shouting, and I then realised pulling into my little road where I lived would be a bad idea so I kept going for miles, turning, even u turning, going round roundabouts 2 or 3 times. They stayed with me.
No hands free to make a call and trying to keep the boys calm.
I was trying to remember if the local town had a police station but then they tired and headed off in another direction.
Moral of the story is just don't react. Nutters everywhere.
Edited to add:
Quad question answered thanks.

Really? I presume you’ve been driving for quite a while and have never, ever considered that beeping someone is likely to wind them up? You’ve never been beeped, you’ve never read stories in the paper about how things escalated? 99.99% of people who get beeped, know they’ve probably done wrong, but most will still at best respond with an aggressive hand movement, a few will take it further. Just as the dI had no idea that tooting angered up some people, what sort of person would actually get so angered by that as to react as they did? I don't meet people like that! Maybe in naive.

head in the pub scenario can play out as I described before. Unless you had been prepared to escalate any issues with him, and resulting in fisticuffs, you know you should have let him have his aggro elsewhere, especially with a child on board. If necessary stop and let him go way ahead. That way you are just able to tut and shake your head, any other way results in stress for a day or more, or in a physical confrontation. If he was looking for a confrontation, let him find it with someone bigger, harder, and more ruthless than him.
You say the upset to your nephew pee’d you off. I am sorry to say that you were wholly responsible for that by responding the way you did.
..and I doubt it had anything to do with your car.

I work in London and the amount of beeping that goes on would mean everyone's getting stabbed were society as you make out. (i mean as i see as a pedestrian when in certain areas, as i get the train in).
the other day i was behind someone who didn't move at a green light despite there being nothing ahead. i waited 30 seconds and then tooted. They put hand up in apology. Have we reached a situation where any use of the horn is considered provocation?

edit. so someone veers into your lane and causes you to have to brake to avoid a collision, you don't toot a warning that your there, in anticipation that the person in question may get out of there car for the horrendous crime and affront that a simply toot causes, and then wave a screwdriver at you and threaten to do you in and steal your car!?
seems logical justification of the situation.

Interestingly you’ve deliberately exaggerated the point I made. I said most people will respond with an aggressive hand movement, but a few will take it further. A few taking it further does not mean, everyone is getting stabbed. if i get beeped and know I've done something wrong i will put a hand up in apology. if im unaware of what i've done i will be bemused not angry, as most people would i imagine.

I refuse to believe that someone working in London doesn’t understand that drivers get angry when beeped at.
Yes we have reached the point where use of the horn is seen as an aggressive move. We reached that point a long, long time ago.
I think you can see from most of the replies beeping your horn is definitely seen as an aggressive move.
It also sounds like you beep your horn a lot, I’m surprised it’s taken this long for you to be confronted.
I have sympathy for you as you don’t deserve to be threatened especially with a child on board. But maybe this is the wake up call to ignore morons and stop being a road warrior.

im a pedestrian in London. people beep pointlessly in stationary traffic, i have no idea why, or often at junctions or when forcing themselves into other lanes. i don't drive in London.

fair enough, but from my 2 mentioning of beeping make that great PH leap that i do it a lot It also sounds like you beep your horn a lot, I’m surprised it’s taken this long for you to be confronted.

love it here especially when its never clear whose a WUM! although i probably do toot too much. i should just wait behind the green light person ad infinitum, or not toot a warning that im present in case i think another road user hasn't seen me as in the above situation.
if someone veered into your lane causing you to take avoiding action, would you not toot. Actually don't bother answering, clearly you wouldn't but i imagine reality may be a tad different.
Anyway, anyone actually able to answer my initial questions, re Cams etc?

I have sympathy for you as you don’t deserve to be threatened especially with a child on board. But maybe this is the wake up call to ignore morons and stop being a road warrior.
fair enough, but from my 2 mentioning of beeping make that great PH leap that i do it a lot It also sounds like you beep your horn a lot, I’m surprised it’s taken this long for you to be confronted.

love it here especially when its never clear whose a WUM! although i probably do toot too much. i should just wait behind the green light person ad infinitum, or not toot a warning that im present in case i think another road user hasn't seen me as in the above situation.
if someone veered into your lane causing you to take avoiding action, would you not toot. Actually don't bother answering, clearly you wouldn't but i imagine reality may be a tad different.
Anyway, anyone actually able to answer my initial questions, re Cams etc?
But From your responses I’m getting a clear picture of an angry, aggressive person who likes to beep at others. but bottles it when someone responds.
Beep all you want but don’t start crying when someone responds badly and your balls disapear.
I did feel sorry for you, but now I don’t care.
Get a dashcam and post future incidents online for approval from like minded people. Bonus points if you delete you beeping or aggravating them.
