As title says really, I reckon I was doing around 38 in a 30 dual carriageway this morning 8:20am. Semi-dark and raining. Braked as soon as I clocked it was a speed enforcement van around 120yds away or so.

Anyway, I know it’s deserved if caught and wouldn’t try to wiggle my way out of it. My questions are;
Would the van have been in operation if the back windows were closed?
It would be my first motoring offence if caught, what would be the chances of me being offered a speed awareness course?

Disappointed really but these things happen and lesson learnt going forward.

Hi

Just got the same myself, I believe that in a 30 at less than 41 mph and having not attended a SAC in the last 3 years from the date of the offence youll get a fine (£100) and a SAC with any luck

Just read your thread, didn’t see it before. I guess mods can close this one if they wish.

Dave.

You might be lucky if your speedo over reads. My dads E39 would be doing around 34 at an indicated 38.

Not both, although the cost of a SAC, travel, day off work, can be like a fine.

You can usually find the van locations on a website.

But be wary of that.

The location is allowed because of "numerous serious or fatal accidents" but that spot is not necessarily where the van might be. IE, they will put the van as close to the 30 sign as they can to maximise potential, not necessarily where the accidents have happened that mean they put the van there and have to tell you about it, so you can easily get caught in a zone where there is no danger, no paths, no crossings, fences, wide roads etc.

It might be a fair way away from where the van is, and obviously they put them in the areas of most potential to increase revenue.

Would gratefully accept a SAC if offered one.

Does anyone know much about the operation of these things? I.e. In use or not if back windows are closed.

Windows closed = not in operation

Yep - you might be in luck, assuming you were actually above the threshold.

Last one I saw had the back doors closed with a window behind which was a very visible camera. I assmed that that device can film vehicles throught the solid glass.

If the doors were shut and the camera was visible then I'd say the hatch was open as all the scamera vans I've seen with a hatch have darkened glass so you can't see the camera if they're shut. The lasers can work through glass but they're not supposed to be operated like that.

At a car show had a long chat with a camera van operative & his view was that if somebody was taking the mickey & excessively speeding he would be snapped, no question.
Another driver who was alert enough to the camera & responded quickly by braking might be ignored.
Yet again a driver just a few miles an hour over the limit (he failed so say how many mph) might be ignored also.
However I suspect that there are some vindictive camera operatives who delight in snapping everybody whether a mile or so over the limit or not.
Van window closed - doubt if camera operates through the glass.

I reckon you might just be lucky. Let us know.
