If the authorities in the uk are so convinced that speeding is dangerous why are all cars not restricted to circa 80mph. That way at least the extreme speeding would be eliminated.

It is possible to drive your car to locations where you aren't restricted to speeds below 80mph.

Don't give them ideas!!!
Japan has/had a blanket restriction of I think 180kph, so there is precedent but it has no effect on the most dangerous speeding (those doing inappropriate speeds past schools at chucking out, or through residential streets often at way below motorway speeds).

That and people would just pay to have it mapped out of the ecu.

I'm no specialist but if my memory of a TG episode serves correctly (Nissan GTR vs bullet train episode) the limitations are GPS linked and the restriction is automatically lifted if for example you take your car to a race track.

Not that I'm condoning the idea of course.

What happens if they decide not to renew the "Temporary" national speed limit. As well as our cars being able to reach the limit when abroad, we would quite like visiting cars to still be able to come here without being illegal. Some groups of people, when driving cars are also allowed to exceed the speed limit.

Yep our 70 and 60 limits were always sold as temporary and the underpinning SI still is a continuation order of the temporary limit.

I thought the Minister was given the power to set the limits in 1967 without further Acts of parliament & it was set then at 70 permanently.
In other words as permanent as any other limit in that it can be changed at the Minister's bidding & remains what it is until that happens, no longer requiring further extensions (ie temporary), with non trunk roads being at the local council's bidding rather than Minister's.

The temporary was initially for four months starting Dec 1965, then extended a further two times before becoming permanent in 1967 by virtue of what I said above.

You are spot on but it is an indefinite extension still (mis) named temporary.
