5 cars stolen around Thames Valley area on NYE/NYD
Discussion
Yep, absolute scum bags out nicking cars again.
A family member had his house burgled and Audi S3 taken off his drive while out on NYE.
A jaguar was also taken from someone else on his road. Poilce told him that 3 others had been reported too.
Prime time for thieves I suppose with noise from fireworks and lots of people out celebrating.
What a horrible start to the year though.
When is this country going to get a grip on car theft and actual serious punishment to preparators to actually deter them from doing it in the future?
Doubt it'll happen in my lifetime.

no seriously ,
For the Police to have the resources to actually give a s
t, for the Scum to be caught, and given a custodial sentence in a Prison, not the easy street version we have now...liberal and often beatings and no playstations tv etc etcIts obvious isnt it ? The scum are gaining the upper hand every single day...
No Police
No real deterrants
No shame

what would kind of punishment would satisfy you ??
Burglary in the UK is supposed to be a 5-13year sentence depending if it aggrevated /involving weapons. I expect most people will agree this is a good starting point. However what are the chances of getting caught?!!!
Perhaps if the police caught more of these people and the courts and prison services did their job then people might be a dissuaded from taking up stealing cars as an occupation.

I don't like the thought of putting these people in prison. It's expensive and rehabilitation for inmates leaving prison (i.e. getting a job) is difficult, which in turn encourages offenders to re-offend.

king good pasting? There HAS to be a punishment for the crime. The scum these days have no fear of being or the repercussions, therefore are at will to continue an unabated life od crime.A few basball bats cost way less than a prison sentence, so we all win ?

What about community sentences for undesirable manual labor work? A good example that comes to mind is removing fatbergs from sewers.

just checked sentencing guide lines and domestic burglary starts at community sentence up to 6 years.

The fact is that incarceration does not work because in England and Wales, between April 2013 and March 2014, 46% of adult prisoners were found to have re-offended within a year of release. The figure is 60% for people sentenced to less than a year. https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploa...
I don't see much logic in the taxpayer financing a system that has a 50% failure rate.
However, non of them re-offended whilst they were locked up.I don't see much logic in the taxpayer financing a system that has a 50% failure rate.

You can't keep them locked up for life for stealing a car. You have to rehabilitate offenders at some point in time, so best time to start is now.Turn7 said:

And yet crime is at historically low levels:

54% were rehabilitated, so some would appear to have learned from their misguided life choices.
No, that's not the statistic. The statistic is that 54% did not re-offend in the first 12 months. That does not mean that 54% never re-offended.The link I posted shows that short sentences are ineffective because the re-offending rate is as high as 60% for 12 month sentences. It's not until we start looking at 4-10 year sentences where re-offending rate drops to 26% and 16% for 10 years or more for.
The question is therefore if we want to discourage re-offending for stealing cars do we:
a. Lock up offenders for 5-10 years at an extremely high cost to the tax payer
b. Look for alternative punishments which are both cheaper and less likely to result in recidivism
The victim or offender ?
Each day a prolific burglar is incarcerated is a day where ordinary decent hard working people don’t have their homes and lives violated
Some burglars might target 4 or 5 homes in a day .. every day
If some little toerag is paid £200 for breaking into your home, violating your family and stealing your car possibly costing you/us 10’s thousands of pounds I think a 6 year sentence would make him think twice about it .. and deter others
The first priority of the state is to Protect its citizens
