I'm in the middle ground here.

DVLA online shows no points as the old points are expired and now removed (4 years rule - SP30's).

Insurance asks for "accidents, claims or convictions for the last 5 years?".

I'm in the middle of 4 & 5 years when I got the points and so DVLA does not have them online and they must be declared to the insurance company on renewal in 2 weeks time.

Is it just a case of ringing DVLA and getting the points over the phone (I spent 25 mins on the phone today and was then cut off )?

If it were me, I wouldn’t bother declaring.

If ins company asks a question then you should answer it honestly. If they say five years then you should answer for five years.

At my last renewal they asked 5 years for accidents/claims and 3 years for convictions/points.

To be honest, I don’t think most insurance companies care about 3 points for speeding or load the premium for it.

If it's a renewal as above or if they have previously been declared as a quote you took up then they will already have them.

Did you declare the points to your insurer last year? If so they will be recorded by your insurer together with the offence date you declared.

Speeding is disclosable, if asked, for 5 years under the rehabilitation of offenders act. Under 5 years you have to tell if asked, over 5 years and you can act as if it never happened.

There is nothing to be gained from telling fibs to insurance companies, so why bother fibbing? It doesn’t make you big or clever, so grow up.

As mentioned above, an SP30 on your licence is very common now and most quotes won’t be increased because of it.

There are two reasons to have car insurance. One is because the law says you must have it, and the other is because most of us can’t face the full financial impact of a bad crash that injures ourselves, others, and damages property.

The question is not "have you got any points on your licence?", to which the correct answer would now be "no.
The question is "have you been convicted of a motoring offence in the past five years", to which the correct answer is "yes".
The points make no difference. It's actually possible to be convicted of SP30 and have no points. It's rare but it has happened.

If you correctly declared them 12 months ago then why bother faffing around with the DVLA?
Just ring your insurer and explain that you can no longer get the info this way - https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence
Your insurer already has the details, so if they want the question answered again they can give them to you from their own records.
