Whose car is it?
Discussion
All hypothetical but may come in handy
I went and bought a car and the receipt is in my name Therefore i am the owner
My wifes name is on the V5 She then is the registered keeper , even better she doesn't drive
Can either of us take out the insurance just naming the drivers as myself and our son or must she have a driving licence to insure it?
After all companies and hire firms are named on the V5 and do not have licences
edited to amend phrasing of question

Most insurance proposals will ask "are you the registered keeper and owner" - you can be one, both or neither to insure a vehicle, but it's best to be upfront with them give their reputation for trying to wriggle out of claims.
In your hypothetical example, there wouldn't, IMO, be a problem as long as the insurers were happy with it.
Personally I am the RK, owner and insurer of one vehicle,
I pay for the finance on another (I would say that I have title of ownership) but it is insured and registered to my other half, and I daily drive a third vehicle that is neither owned, registered or insured by myself....
The Registered Keeper is solely responsible for the taxing and registering of the vehicle, along with being the first port of call for any authority or insurance enquiries.
Where it gets messy is when the RK is being held liable for the actions of the driver, or the RK is being assumed to be the driver, or the RK is assumed to be the owner but that's a whole different topic.

Also isn't there a risk that the insurers might think that your wife is fronting for your son?
This is what the OP is really asking. I have just bought a car for my son, I have registered in the wifes name so as she can insure it because it will be cheaper. Will I get caught?NGee said:
