It seems to me that whenever i get on a motorway these days i am confronted by miles and miles of roadworks signs and reduced speed limits.

Most of the time nothing of any significance seems to be going on and I can't see any difference when the cones all go away.

The dot Matrix speed signs on the central reservation are displaying 50MPH for miles and miles but i hardly ever come across a reason for the reduced speeds.

Is everyone else now treating these limits as 'advisory'?

Hence my posting the other day wondering where the cones hotline had gone. Much as it was derided at the time, we need something like it again to stop the roads being overtaken by an army of cones.

Yes I'd say there are. Encountered a new one on me the other day.

M-way NSL, approaching complicated junction on the off slip, also traffic cones everywhere so I'd pegged my speed way way back.

Rounding a corner on the slip to encounter official 20 mph limit. Proper signs, red circle etc.

Not a worker in sight. Most driver's eyes were just scanning for the camera van.

Traffic Cone Hotline set up by former prime minister John Major.

In its first month 11,000 people called, but only a few months later this had dipped to 279 a month
