Is it 25% plus VAT or simply a fee of 25%?

25% of the settlement, or award made by a court. Plus the cost of an After The Event insurance policy they will (usually) have got you to take out to cover legal fees if you lose in court. No VAT involved.

Check you haven't got Legal Expenses Insurance on any insurance policy, that might cover such a claim.

I had legal expenses insurance which covered medical negligence... but only in very limited circumstances and it didn’t cover (for example) misdiagnosis.

Also the fee that the law firm takes isn’t as straightforward as X% of any settlement. They take a cut of some elements of the award but not others.

I’m 18 months into a claim.
