My daughter received a NIP yesterday in the post stating she was caught on camera at 81mph in a 70 on the A1 at junction 48 at 12.06 on 30th January 2019.
Now bearing in mind she has only been driving 2 months and has black box fitted to her car which shows she was at college parked at that time and in lessons from the attendance register, also the fact the speeding incident is over 80 miles away from there, is it just a case of ringing the number on the reverse of the NIP and explaining the situation? I have gathered all the evidence yesterday to prove it wasn't her car.
I bought her a private plate for Xmas which is in total standard spacing and lettering but it's the same plate on the NIP so I'm starting to presume the car pictured is displaying a adapted private plate and it's been read wrong and noted down wrong.

Any advice appreciated as this is the first time anything like this has happened to anyone on the family.

Can you ring 101 and ask to be put through to the police force where the NIP was sent from? Explain what happened to the plates and how they got cloned. Criminals are using sites like newreg to copy private plates, buying plates from show plate makers who don't need a V5... I bought a registration off newreg, despite the fact I have registered it with DVLA and got the V5 to reflect that, the same registration number is still up for sale on their site frown

Does the black box have tracking data which you can get from your insurers that you can send in?

The black box has all the tracking data for all her journeys. On the 30th it shows her leaving home for college and then the return journey some 5 hours later leaving college and returning home. College have her signed in to all her lessons too.

I bought the plate off the official dvla website in November last year and we transferred it onto her car over the Xmas period.

Its fairly simple for us to prove she wasn't there and if they actually release the photos of the car caught I'm certain it won't be the same as hers!

There is a number to ring on the back of the NIP but not open till Monday.

Do not call 101. Contact the central ticket office on Monday.

It’s very likely a misread plate. Not something to worry about.

1. Ring number.
2. Explain situation.
3. Send proof if requested.
4. Forget about it and get on with your life.

2a. Expect some doubt from the person at the other end as they probably hear "my plates must have been cloned" about 100x per day.

I think she should do the decent thing and own up and take the points. Speed kills and just because the car was parked up 80 miles away and she was in a class room doesn't mean she wasn't the driver, or thinking about speeding, or once read about it on the internet.

The police don't make mistakes, your daughter does, she's human, the police are not. Have you any idea how many people get killed by young drivers who are sat in classrooms? Well it's a lot. Loads and loads. Thinking about it, a short prison sentence for PTCOJ should sort her out. And a lengthy ban after for good measure.

Yeh I'm expecting them to say we have to prove it so I've printed all the info from the black box tracker. Also I'm hoping once I explain what car the plate is on its significantly different from the one they have on the pictures.

It's all the OPs fault. They knew that their daughter was a student and a girl but let her have a car anyway. It would have been obvious to anyone that her hormones, coupled with all the ecstasy she was almost definitely smoking at the time was an accident waiting to happen. Driving at that speed whilst instachatting on her phone could have killed us all. wink

Dear god, the charge sheet gets longer.

Speeding, she can't have been in proper control of the vehicle if it was 80 miles away at the time while parked up . Driving under the influence, driving while using the phone. She's a danger to us all and it's a clear reflection of the OP's poor parenting skills. Put the whole family in jail, including the cat.

How do you know they've got a cat?
Is there something going on here we should know about?

If they haven't got one, then buy them one and put that in jail.

When BRAKE gets hold of this there will be hell to pay.

What I want to know is why are the dog and the budgie being allowed to escape any form of sanction? It stinks!

It is likely to be a misread by the auto read system.
Your daughter needs to call and give the nip number, then explain not there.
The ticket office will call up the image and look to see if it is a misread. It probably is.

I read on the internet that speed is a factor in 100% of road accidents, so if your daughter drove to college that morning at a speed, or home again later at another speed, then she is an accident waiting to happen, and should be disqualified for her own good.
