My son is currently having work done on his car, it's covered under the 3 year manufacturers warranty. If the same problem were to reappear after the original 3 year warranty expires would he be charged for it, or is that particular work covered for a further 3 years?

No ideas for a name

It is the car that is under the 3 year warranty not the work.
So, no, the work would be covered until the end of the warranty.

AIUI If you make a contribution to the work, you might get 12 months warranty on that.

I had a similar situation with bmw. The new parts installed have a one year warranty, so if they fail within that period they must replace under the parts warranty.

I exercised this when an alloy wheel that was replaced cracked after 50 weeks. They replaced foc.
