Pulled Friday night
Discussion
Ho hum.
Pulled again.
A few friends from out of town were staying locally for Japfest this weekend. So, being my town, I arrange to take them out. And as we all own 2 door 2+2 Jap coupes, transport to the restaurant is a problem.....
So I borrow a BMW 5 series from a good friend for the eveing. It's insured fully comp, I'm insured fully comp so I can drive the thing 3rd party. We're talking 2 runs of 3 miles at 30mph here.
We'd have needed two cabs, and getting a return trip on a Friday night at 11pm is an hour or more.
So we have a nice meal, I drive home. Drop said friends at hotel and drive the 300m to my house. As I pull out of the turning, a jam sandwich drops into formation behind me.
As I live 50m from the local cop shop, I assume he's heading back there.
I turned left, he turned left. Copshop is straight on.
At which point I mutter to my passanger "He's going to pull me".
Sure enough, 30 seconds later, blue lights.
So I think, bugger it, and roll the 50m onto the drive of the owners of the BMW (next door to me).
So far, so whatever. It's insured, I'm stone cold, no worries.
Get out, say "evening officer" and he invites me to sit in his car. I ask if I can let my passenger in the house first, and he agrees to this.
I then open the house next door to the one I've just parked on.
This confuses him.
I then take a seat in the cop car and ask how I can be of assistance. He tells me he's pulled me because, and I quote directly "You were driving sensibly as soon as you saw me behind you". He asks if it's my car. I tell him it is not. Now the fun starts.
I explain that I have good enough friends that they'll lend me a newish BMW 5 series. Oddly, the officer declines an offer to breathalize me.
Instead he asks where the car is registered. So I tell him the name and address of the owner (which is the house that I've just parked the thing on).
He peforms a PNC check (20 seconds to respond - impressive), but the information they have is 6 months old and wrong (less impressive).
However the car is insured, and he accepts that my neighbours have given me permission to borrow it.
We then enter my house and I dig out my insurance documents, and the officer is happy that I am insured and that all is in order.
Joy.
He then proceeds to tell me that he knows my house well, as he used to drink with the guy I bought it off.
Gee thanks.
What's my problem with this? Well not much, as I have no problem being stopped late at night and asked a few questions. I'd rather do that a few times and they catch one uninsured pissed idiot.
The officer concerned was polite at all times, and most professional. However, this was 11:30pm on a friday night, and he spent 20 minutes dealing with me. I understand that there is proceedure to follow, but I'm sure all hell was kicking off in town as the pubs emptied.
I suspect that he was driving back to base at the end of the shift and the old 6th sense from years as a copper got ticked by a big blue BMW being driven sensibly (I indicated and everything.....)
If you're out there, hello chum. Say hi to Doc and Lucia for me next time you see him.

You do not describe yourself Mr E. Have you the appearance of being out of order in relation to an expensive vehicle. i.e. was your hood up, were you clean and shaven etc etc. Have you any information on crime state in your area regarding footpads, rogues and vagabonds, idle and disordley persons with a liking for 4 wheel vehicles?
To me well done that Plod for pulling you and having a look see. OK some will think he was on a fishing expedition but it does work I can assure you and the real owner of the Beema if if had been uplifted would we well pleased that the T leaf had been caught.

28, and at the time was wearing a seriously expensive black overcoat and a shirt.
I was not, at the time, wearing the bunny hat.
Besides, he dropped in behind me and cannot have seen the driver at all.
I reckon it was more "Middle class car, 11:30 on Friday, decent chance the driver has had a couple" fish, as you suggest.
I've no problem with that, but he'd pretty much established I was legit within 30 seconds of talking to me. Still, there you go.
I was more amused by the "pulled you because you were driving sensibly" comment. If you going to fish, why not simply say "I pulled you because it's 11:30 on a Friday, lets face it there's a chance you've had a drink.....
