Speeding help please!

I have just received an NIP for 42 in a 30 from Manchester Police. I have looked at various advice sites on t’internet but getting more confused.

I undertook a speed awareness course 6 months ago (I know, I know, but previously clean for 30 years) so that’s out the question. I presumed that 42 in a 30 would be band B anyway however on the speed awareness course they mentioned that different authorities have slightly different thresholds. My NIP clearly states that ‘up to and including 42 would be a SAC if no previous in 3 years’ seems GMP are generous.

My question is does that likely put me in fixed penalty territory? All advice says band B offences are 4-6 points or a small ban.

If I plead guilty (my intention) by post who decides the punishment? Do I have to go to court?

For that you'll get a Conditional offer of a Fixed Penalty (CoFP). Accept the CoFP and it's 3pts / £100, decline it and it's court - or equivalent Single Justice Procedure - where the points will be the same but the fine will be higher (along with victim surcharge, etc.).

It's not been reported that clearly on websites. The % of income for fines is as said only if it goes to court.

It will (normally) only go to court if you have nine or more points already, going too fast for a FPN (in a 30 its 50+) or if you elect to go to court yourself.

42/30 is a course. Otherwise, a £100 fixed penalty with 3 points. Pay close attention to the conditions of any offer.
