We were victims of a home invasion a few weeks ago. A chap broke into the house in the middle of the night. My wife woke up when he was on the landing and screamed the place down. He began threatening us, and demanded car keys.
Instead of the car keys, I offered him something else, about which he was less keen, and he eventually left empty-handed, minus a fair amount of his DNA splashed across my kitchen.
Despite being told DNA results typically take about four weeks to come back, they completed them within a week, identified the fellow picked him up and chucked him in a cell.
We're waiting on a court date; at which he can apparently expect a custodial sentence. I f
king hope so, because he's really shaken my wife up. She won't sleep, even after more than a month, and I've spent a significant sum on installing laminated windows, CCTV, panic buttons and additonal PIRs.
Although one copper told me "We don't recommend that householders do what you did when confronted", everyone else gave me nods of approval. I had expected to be arrested myself, but it seems that's extremely unlikely.
It's a good news story in a way, because it's reassuring to know the police do actually make an effort from time to time. They took the whole thing very seriously, they were efficient, and they kept us fully up to date with matters as far as they were able.

What an awful situation and I hope your wife can eventually move on from this.

I think OP is probably being deliberately opaque because of the pending court case.What an awful situation and I hope your wife can eventually move on from this.

Take the elderly chap that defended himself and his dementia suffering wife against that traveller scumbag armed with a screwdriver. Had he not defended himself would he still be alive.
If someone has armed themselves to break into my house then I'm afraid they'll suffer the consequences.
Had a similar situation though was out at the time. Kicked a gate in then bashed through kitchen door with a piece of concrete. Luckily a neighbour heard the commotion and chased them off by threatening them with a shovel. They only had time to grab one bag that had some photo equipment in it. Police went straight up to Cash Convertors and nabbed them trying to hand it over the counter. Currently awaiting sentencing. Kept up to date throughout by the police. Good result all round

Sorry to hear about your wife - we went through something similar about 7 years ago now.
I'd say she still isn't fully over it, and the first three years before we moved house were awful - she hated leaving the house empty, but then didn't like being in alone either.
She's a bit more relaxed now but still nervous at holiday times etc.

Yeah, it'll take her a while to get over this, I suspect. There are a lot of thoughts about what would have happened if I hadn't been there, or she hadn't woken up. "I was, and you did." doesn't seem to be enough for her 
Details will remain vague because I'm not going to document what happened in case it comes up in court. I won't lie about it, and I'll accept any consequences, but my version of events will remain between me, my wife and the police at the moment
My intention was to get him out of the house, not to kill him. Well, I got him out, and I didn't kill him, although I suspect I may have broken something in the process..
