Picture the scene, distances are accurate.

Travelling along a SC NSL. The last 1.5 miles have been dead straight, couple of houses, couple of minor junctions. Other than that fields each side.

30 limit signs.
0.05 mile later, pub entrance.
0.05 mile after pub entrance, NSL signs.
(Yes the total length of the 30 limit is O.1 mile, one tenth of a mile)

It gets better......

50 yds after the NSL sign.........

You get 50 limit signs at the junction of the SC with a 50 limited DC.

No wonder folks get confused. Worcestershire in case you wondered.

Best ones I drive down are in Lincoln.

Dual carriageway that has some turn offs but is lane controlled leading up to it, i.e three lanes with one open for traffic going in in the morning and one open in evening for traffic going out. The dual carriageway goes over a large bridge before you hit lights and junctions, but it is still 30mph!! It also has a Truvelo on so no naughty speeding!!

Also in Lincoln, single carriageway with a 40mph limit. Goes to a junction which drops it to 30mph. The 30mph then goes back to 40 the moment you leave the junction boundary. Very odd one!!!

Theres a SC road near me:

50mph westbound up to a roundabout into a housing estate, roundabout = 40mph, 50mph once past roundabout

50mph eastbound up to same roundabout, roundabout = 30mph, 50mph once past roundabout

Speed onto the estate = 20mph

what?

Driving down the A34 (NSL dual CW) there is a short section leading up to roaundabout that has a pedestrian crossing. The speed halves for all of 200 yards before returning to NSL. Most people ignore it, but doing 60mph in the 30 zone could see you licence going south.........

There's a DC near here that is NSL in one direction (i.e. 70) and 50 in the other. No buildings or side roads on either carriageway, so why the difference?

You can guess which side the scamera van sits... (very regularly)

Why oh why can't they just stick up a sign that says, 'keep 'em peeled, there's a pub entrance coming up'?

I thought I knew of the shortest change in speed limit when I went to South Wales! at the Juction of the A477 and B4314 from Pendine its NSL to 30mph for just before the cross roads. Then its 40mph on the A477 (previously NSL). The 30mph is all of 0.1 mile long.
If it werent for trees you would see the two signs

Plus on A477 heading towards Tenby, an NSL becomes 50 then 40 all for a petrol station, before NSL again.

Totally agree. But I guess when drivers are not taught to be observant, but simply to abide by speed limits, then the only way you can get the message across is by reducing the limit. Isn't it frightening?!

Ah yes m'dear, I would have a look at Ings one day, but that would mean visiting Cumbria, and like Wales I refuse to spend any money in places where jokers like Claggacan lurk. At my age I might have to spend a penny.
