March 2019 - I drove my fathers car to Bologna in Italy for a brief trip.

Fast forward to May 2019. My father receives a recorded delivery letter in the post from the Italian Police!

I was caught doing 77 in a 70.

The fine is fifty odd euros.

I think there may be another one its away, currently in the post office ("Sorry we missed you" slip posted in the letter box).

What are my options?

Can I just ignore?

Thanks in advance for any advice given,

Regards,

Keemaklan

I have been to Italy a number of times in the last few years

It is immediately obvious that they like their speed cameras which are endemic on even the most lightly traffic roads in the countryside

Your fine is modest - Id suggest you pay it for a quiet life and move on

Others may disagree

Cheers

Been caught in many countries in Europe for the last few years. Latvia the latest. If it comes to me via the rental car company I pay for it. Not worth the hassle the next time I return. Just a fine, no points. Germany and Austria were fast, fine was with me within weeks. Latvia it took 9 months to come...

Where were you? Well north I presume? I’ve driven a lot in Italy recently and I’ve only seen one “tutor” average system on a motorway headed Bologna to Rimini.

Other than that nothing.

Bloody hell, in Italy they used to applaud you for driving fast! Times change. In 2008 I set a gantry camera off not far from where we were sailing from, Ancona, in an R8 doing 165! I saw it go off and shat myself all the way to the port, expecting to be arrested on arrival and have the car impounded. Not a peep at the time or afterwards. Wouldn't get away with it now.

I think chasing you from abroad is much more prevalent these days, I've just got back from the Spa classic, I think I managed to behave myself all the way from Amsterdam to the destination and back, but it won't come as any surprise if something turns up in the post.

Good luck, I think I'd just pay that for how little it is.

Whether you pay it or not is up to your morals, as is what you declare at your next insurance renewal.

For the sake of €50 I would pay up even if it was sent directly to me.

The fact the fine was sent to your dad I would make sure he wasn't going to face any issues due to my actions.

Seems a low cost, last time I was stopped in Italy it was 200 Euro on the spot. I would pay as you never know what database you end up on and it would be hard to explain to your Mother if your dad was nicked at customs when going on a romantic holiday to Rome!

Tuscany and Umbria

Masses of them although most are dummies which the locals seem to know although I treated them all as real which obviously lead to a degree of frustration behind me

Yeah. Unless your dad is in a care home with dementia and no idea what he's doing its a bit of a dick move to even consider leaving him dealing with the hassle/worry of this over £45.

Added to that , if you don't pay they have the option of passing the debt to a UK based company who will persue it on their behalf.

Agree. Don't be a mean selfish son, pay up.

That’s annoying. I thought the Italians were immune from this kind of stuff. Shame.

I'd insist on extradition to face my crimes.

2 weeks should be enough.

As it’s italy I would personally return to sender as undeliverable at least for the first letter, especially if it’s in Italian unless there’s some crazy penanlty for not paying mentioned. Prob worth paying attention if you get a follow up though.

Is your own time really worth so little you prefer to play this game over £45?

Yeah... I’d ignore or return the first one and see what happened assuming the 50 Euro’s wasn’t a discount. Likely id not get round to posting it though.

Maybe (probably) I am giving terrible advice in 2019... The sensible thing is obviously to pay it, but as the OP asked he’s like many of us who for one reason or another aren’t instantly inclined towards paying a foreign speeding ticket... I had missed the part where it arrived recorded delivery, which to me is a miracle from our Italian friends!
