Well after 25 years of clean licence I finally got my first speeding ticket. It was an uphill section of two lane in one direction, one lane the other in the middle of no where. I saw the van but missed the fact that it was a 50mph, not a 60 so went blithely past at (what turns out to be) 61mph.

Totally safe, empty dry road, very capable car, blah blah, but counts for nothing of course - I'm the dangerous guy, someone driving past a school at home time at 29mph in a 30mph is the safe guy.

Anyway, moan over. Having never had one of these before, I'm wondering what chance there is of one of these safer driving courses I've heard about? I guess there's a speed threshold?

Also, any suggestions for speed camera detectors? Appreciate it wouldn't have helped in this situation, but one more of these and I'm half way to losing my licence, which is a sobering thought.

Upper threshold for a SAC is likely to be [limit +10% +9mph] - you're well within that.

It has a 'I wish to be considered for a speed awareness course box', so I'll tick it and hope for the best.

Whole thing is extremely frustrating, but my fault of course.

I was offered a course for 71 in a 60 so fingers crossed for you.

Interestingly I was the only one in the room of maybe 50 people that had been done in anything other than a 30 limit. Which probably says more about speed enforcement in towns vs country roads <shakes fist at Cumbria SCP> than anything else, but equally I know who I think was driving more dangerously.

Exactly the same on the course I did - I was there for doing 82 in a 70 (empty dual carriageway, sunny clear day blah blah blah), but everyone else had been doing 37 in a 30 and the like and the course was clearly very much aimed at reducing speeding in built-up areas, rather than what I'd done. But at least it kept points off the licence.

I completed a speed awareness course a couple of years back for the exact same speed - 61 in a 50.

I think it would be extremely harsh if you got anymore than an awareness course for it as it clearly is a lapse of awareness... 61 in what could was assumed by mistake to be a 60. Is there anyway you can highlight this?

Sorry for crashing into your child, it was a lapse of awareness. My mistake. Soz.

Might have been the OHs sister - she's done 4 or 5 of them.

The National Guidelines are 57 - 64 mph for an awareness course. Anything over and you'll get points, anything under and they won't normally bother you.

It was in Dorest, A35 near Bridport.

Won't somebody think of the children!!? biggrin

Fear not, there were no children on the road or anywhere near it to be harmed at 50mph, 61mph, 20mph or 100mph.

Same section as I got caught on then... the courses are fairly straight forward ...

About 5 miles along on the same road there's another identical two one way, one the other, and that's 60mph.

Obviously this one is more dangerous because... Umm...

...because this section often has a camera van in attendance which causes people to panic brake. Makes it much more dangerous, clearly.

Yep. Here's an eligibility table from the North Yorks police document on SACs.

Not entirely sure if hitting a child at 50 or 60 MPH will make much difference to the outcome.

Was it by Eype? Near the service station?

It was more a comment on someone saying is it worth raising it was a mistake as they thought it was 60 not 50.

I've had something to eat now and less miserable ha. (But my point still stands, if you don't see a speed limit sign, what else are you missing?).
