Back in January I had a minor accident, minding my own business in the left lane of two to go right, to my left (in a lane that branches left) a car crosses the chevrons without indicating and hits the front passenger wing of my car, he then drives off. All on dashcam.

Damage to my car was pretty minor (well, still a few hundred quids worth of bodywork repairs), I report it to my insurance company who inform me I must notify the police.

Fast forward several months and lots of form filling and I get a letter from the police informing me no further action will be taken against the driver (which is fine, I just wanted my car fixed), interestingly they include his full name and address in the letter 'for information'.

The next day I get home from work and there is a man stood waiting on my driveway. I get out of the car and he walks towards me holding his letter up to my face (same letter, but with my contact details for his info).

I'm the least confrontational person in the world and with my 4 year old by my side I just say ok and walk past him and go into my house. Ever since I've been pretty nervous about a return visit. I think I probably surprised him by not getting involved at all.

Is there any reason that the police would exchange our details several months later? The insurance side is being dealt with by the insurers, so there is zero need for me to contact him.

I’d say that’s a massive breach of data protection giving each other’s addresses out

I’d be complaining to the police

Also I’d inform them that he turned up to your house and held that letter up to your face.

That can only be described as a massive fk up and you need to be complaining to your local force.

That was my assumption, but it was clearly intentional so I assume they must have a reason for doing it?

Wow. That’s terrible.

I’m not normally one to complain but that would have me on the phone to somebody or visiting my local station.

I had that happen about 15 years ago.

Only ever had one reason to report anything to the Police so I assumed it was just what they do.

Don't complain about the police to the police. It will get you absolutely no where. Don't go to the IPCC, the ones at the top are ex coppers. Best complain to the IOPC.

Is this for real? If so then I’d be mightily pissed off with the actions of the police regarding the letters.

It must be, it's clearly not an error on the letter.

My comment was more of a “that’s unbelievable” rather than questioning your honesty smile

You realise the IOPC has replaced the IPCC right...

When I was in an RTC I had to give permission for the OIC to send my details to the other party and other way round. If one of us had refused, we would have to request the details via our insurance company.

It's worth asking the question.

Pretty certain I've not consented to anything on any forms in that respect, I wouldn't have knowingly, particularly so as it was a fail to stop so we've not communicated before.

Looks like the letter is one used to explain to both parties when it is already assumed that details have been exchanged. Maybe there is a separate template when that isn't the case. If that is true and it is possible select the wrong one, then i can't imagine what could possibly go wrong....

He said 'the police took no action' or something along those lines I think. I just wanted to get in the house. Whilst he wasn't aggressive as such I was really, really uncomfortable and shocked. I'm assuming he was making a point that I reported 'him' yet he was cleared (apart from higher insurance premiums I guess) but as I didn't react to him at all he never got a chance to expand on whatever point he was here to make.
